After an offseason of hype and high expectations, the Cleveland Browns’ performance on Sunday was perhaps the biggest letdown of the season’s first Sunday.
But as a fan, taking out your frustrations on opposing players is not the way to handle things.
Logan Ryan: ‘It’s ridiculous’
In the fourth quarter of the Tennessee Titans’ drubbing of the Browns, cornerback Malcolm Butler picked off Baker Mayfield and ran it back 38 yards for a touchdown, the final points in Tennessee’s 43-13 win.
Clutching the ball, Butler jumped onto the wall separating the stands from the field, and was quickly joined by a couple of teammates, including Logan Ryan. They were greeted by a man in a Titans jersey.
But in video posted by Titans writer Jim Wyatt, a Browns fan wearing a Mayfield jersey can be see spraying what looks like a can of beer up into the faces of the Titans players.
Ryan didn’t do anything in the moment, but he expressed his displeasure during a Monday interview on SiriusXM NFL radio.
“In this day and age it’s ridiculous,” Ryan said, via Wyatt. “I understand that we play football. I understand that we’re modern-day gladiators. I understand that fans feel like they can yell and say and degrade, whatever, but you know, we’re human beings.
“And I think in society nowadays that’s, with everything going on and everybody deserving their rights, I think as a player to hop up over the rail and to have beer splashed in your face and you’re not allowed to respond.
“Fans are allowed to throw beer in our face and yell whatever they want to yell at us and there’s no penalty?”
‘Don’t be this guy’
The bottle the fan sprayed appears to be Bud Light; the company’s social media team saw Wyatt’s tweet with the video of the bad behavior and was clear that it doesn’t condone what he did.
“PSA: this is not how you do a #BudLightCelly [celebration]. Don’t be this guy,” the beer brand wrote on its official Twitter page.
No word as of yet from the Browns or FirstEnergy Stadium on potential punishment for the fan in question.
