Forza Motorsport's first reviews are out, with the game off to a solid start on Metacritic.

The sim racing game — which launches next week on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass — is the series' first Motorsport entry since 2017, and features more than 500 cars as well as a brand new career mode that puts an emphasis on car building and customisation.

At the time of writing, Forza Motorsport has a Metacritic score of 84 on Xbox Series X|S (based on 55 reviews) and 83 on PC (based on 15 reviews). On OpenCritic, it is currently on a score of 83 (based on 33 reviews).

Reviewers have praised the driving, authenticity, and level of detail, though some feel the career mode could have benefitted from having more variety.

Here's what the critics have been saying about Turn 10 Studios' latest title:

Digital Spy - Unscored

"It's a game that, I think, is newcomer-friendly and a good starting point if you've ever wanted to give the series or the sim racing genre a go. There will obviously be more to like for car fans, but this also comes across as a polished title that's considerate towards newer players."

IGN - 8/10

"It looks great, feels great, sounds great, and it’s brought with it the most impressive multiplayer we’ve seen in the series so far.

"First on the list of improvements Turn 10 should focus on is revamping the new RPG-inspired upgrade system that turns progression into an unnecessarily long road ahead of each individual car, and maybe bringing back the joys of split-screen multiplayer racing to complement the excellent online modes."

GameSpot - 9/10

"The inclusion of car-specific progression creates a stronger relationship between you and each car you own in your garage, with the methods of leveling each on up pushing you to hone your racing craft in the most rewarding way the series has delivered thus far. Forza Motorsport does this all without forgetting its heritage, delivering a standout simulation racing experience that looks and sounds stunning, while feeling reliably accurate and satisfying on the tarmac."

Eurogamer - 4/5

"The previous outing, Forza Motorsport 7, boasted many innovations on its forebears; the new game, by contrast, is one of refinement, rather than radical change."

GamesRadar - 3.5/5

"The game engine here is demonstrably better than Forza Motorsport 7's but, in terms of breadth of gameplay, presentation, general excitement, and enjoyment gleaned from racing the AI cars, the older, now-deleted Forza Motorsport 7 is clearly superior.

"More content including tracks and event series will be added over time, so it will certainly improve, but right now the career mode here is so sedate and one-note, it's hard to recommend Forza Motorsport's offline mode over any of its peers."

Metro - 8/10

"Some of Motorsport’s more obscure design choices – the peculiar approach to multiplayer and the insistence on practise sessions in the Builder Cup – have a chance to prove themselves over time but even if they don’t manage it there’s plenty to enjoy with the excellent presentation and first class racing and car handling.

"Forza Horizon’s colourful festival trappings may make it look more accessible, but Forza Motorsport is a serious and refined alternative."

Polygon - Unscored

"I respect its focus, and its refusal to pander to fun-addled Horizon players, instead offering them a clearly articulated invitation to join its more austere church. This is a game about going round in circles, a little bit faster every time, and it’s quite unapologetic about it. That’s proven compelling enough to base an entire sport around, so perhaps that’s fair enough. But just a little more variety would have gone a long way."

Forza Motorsport is out on October 10, 2023 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass. The Premium Edition allows early access beginning October 5, 2023.
