Former Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has a surprising new job
Ned Colletti is returning to the world of professional sports after five years away, though his new gig is eyebrow-raising.
The NHL’s San Jose Sharks announced Friday that Colletti, the former Los Angeles Dodgers general manager, will join the organization as a professional scout.
Colletti, 65, spent nearly 40 years involved in baseball and became one of MLB’s winningest executives over the past two decades. He hails from Chicago, where he “religiously attended” Chicago Blackhawks games, and is turning his attention to hockey. Per the Sharks, he will primarily focus on scouting at the American Hockey League (AHL) and NHL levels.
"Ned has an extensive background working in professional sports and talent evaluation and he will bring a fresh perspective to our organization's evaluation process," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. "This was a unique opportunity to add someone of Ned's experience to our staff."
Colletti started his career back home with the Chicago Cubs in media relations. He made his name on the West Coast, where in 1994 he became the Giants’ director of baseball operations and later moved into the assistant general manager role.
In 2005, he took over as general manager of the Dodgers and in his nine seasons the team had five postseason runs with three National League championship appearances.
Colletti was replaced after the 2014 campaign and stayed on as an adviser. He won Emmys as a baseball analyst for SportNet LA, wrote a book and taught Sports Management at Pepperdine University.
He’s also worked as a sportswriter, covering hockey in Philadelphia before his baseball career. So a move into scouting hockey, as odd as it sounds, is simply another job change for a man who wants to experience it all.
