Former Clemson, Duke players arrested for armed robbery
Three former college football players were arrested for armed robbery on Wednesday.
According to The State, C.J. Fuller and Jadar Johnson, formerly of Clemson, and former Duke defensive lineman Quaven Ferguson are accused of robbing an individual at gunpoint at an apartment in Clemson, South Carolina, by knocking on the door and forcing their way into the unit. Police say the three stole cash and a cellphone.
Johnson started at safety for Clemson’s 2016 national championship team and earned first-team all-ACC honors, compiling 60 tackles, five interceptions and seven pass breakups on the season. Overall for his career, he totaled 98 tackles and nine interceptions.
After leaving Clemson, he landed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent, but opted to step away from the game shortly thereafter. Johnson recently participated in Clemson’s pro day in an effort to return to the field. He said he spent time away from football in order to focus on his mental health.
Johnson’s name was included on the East roster of the Spring League, a four-team NFL-backed league for players hoping to crack an NFL roster.
Fuller, a running back, was a three-game starter for Clemson in 2017. He rushed for 217 yards and three scores but was passed on the depth chart by Travis Etienne and Tavien Feaster. He decided to leave the Tigers as a graduate transfer in February, but had yet to publicly announce his next school.
Ferguson, a defensive tackle, registered 25 tackles over three seasons at Duke. He left the school in January.
As of Wednesday night, the three were being held in custody ahead of a bond hearing.
