Here’s a great piece on how a dedicated daughter made sure her cancer-stricken father could meet with Tiger Woods for a few minutes before Thursday’s opening round.

No. 18 – Par 4, 465 yards – PAR

And that’s a wrap. Woods finished with an uneventful par on 18 to complete an eventful round that left him with an even-par 72. That’s his best score of the tournament, but far from anything that would have gotten him back into the conversation entering Sunday’s final round.

Woods finishes the day T-42 in the standings and if he’s looking for a reasonable goal for Sunday, it might be moving up a few more spots to avoid his worst finish as a pro at Augusta. He was T-40th with a +5 mark in 2012, so a solid Sunday should undoubtedly put him on the right side of that history.

No. 17 – Par 4, 440 yards – PAR

Woods shanked his drive into the trees on the 15th hole, yet was somehow able to recover and get the ball on the green in two. He hit his first putt almost 40 feet to within a foot, then tapped in for a par that will look a lot less dramatic on the scorecard than it did on the shot by shot tracker.

No. 16 – Par 3, 170 yards – BIRDIE

Woods gets that stroke right back with a great tee shot that left him an easy five-foot birdie putt.

No. 15 – Par 5, 530 yards – BOGEY

Tiger’s drive on No. 15 went left and behind a bank of pines that, on a regular day, would’ve prevented a play for the green. But with a stiff wind bearing down the fairway, Woods was more than happy to sail his ball over the trees and well short of the water in front of the green.

He was less than happy, however, when he saw his approach shot go well past the green and down the back bank. Woods was unable to get up and down to save par and recorded his first bogey since starting the day with two straight.

No. 14 – Par 4, 440 yards – PAR

Woods has played this one well in 2018 and the third round was no exception, the highlight coming when he hit a 70+ putt to two feet for an easy tap-in. Woods and Poulter are motoring along at this point, they could be in the clubhouse by the time the leaders tee off.

No. 13 – Par 5, 510 yards – PAR

Well, that one was fun yet ultimately unsatisfying. An aggressive tee shot found Woods in the pine straw and behind some trees, but Tiger decided to go for the green in two anyway. His ball stayed dry and landed just off the green, yet Woods was unable to get up and down for birdie. Like everything else this week, there were aspects to like, but more aspects to dislike.

No. 12 – Par 3, 155 yards – PAR

With the flag set up to to the left, just past the water on the short end of the green. Tiger plants his first shot on the green about ten feet from the cup. As far as small victories go, this was a big one. Woods had found the water on 12 in each of his last two rounds so you can’t blame him for celebrating this shot with a wide smile and a fist bump for his caddy.

Unfortunately, Woods misread the putt and left it short — as his been his problem for most of the day. Another tap in for par.

No. 11 – Par 4, 505 yards – PAR

Tiger’s best drive of the day so far is crushed down the middle of the fairway. He stuck the landing on the green about 20 feet from the flag to give himself a shot at birdie, but leaves it short and settles for par.

No. 10 – Par 4, 495 yards – PAR

A straight shot down the fairway led to a nice lay up onto the green from 174 yards out. The birdie putt broke well but just wasn’t strong enough for the uphill climb. Woods finished off the hole with a mild tap in for par.

No. 9 – Par 4, 460 yards – PAR

Tiger absolutely drilled his tee shot 319 yards down the fairway. He attacked the pin with his second shot, but couldn’t stick it near the flag. His ball rolled back quite a few yards forcing an uphill put for birdie. He took a strong line at the cup and set himself up for an easy par instead.

No. 8 – Par 5, 570 yards – BIRDIE

Woods’ tee shot landed slightly off the fairway with a good line at the pin. His second shot barely missed right of the green, but a near perfect chip set him just above the flag for a downhill birdie putt that softly fell to bring him back to even on the day.

No. 7 – Par 4, 450 yards – PAR

Another great drive left Tiger in the first cut just to the right of the fairway, but his approach left much to be desired. Woods couldn’t stick his shot near the pin and helplessly watched it roll all the way back down the green. He left his first putt well short of the pin but converted a five-footer for a hard-earned par.

No. 6 – Par 3, 168 yards – BIRDIE

We’ve got a sign of life. A perfectly struck iron out of the tee box set up Woods with a flat, five-foot birdie putt which he sunk with ease. It’s just his sixth birdie of the week and a much-needed one at that.

No. 5 – Par 4, 455 yards – PAR

This might be Woods’ best hole of the round so far, but that’s not saying too much. His drive just stayed on the fairway, and he was able to make his second green in regulation to set up a downhill putt for birdie, but Tiger couldn’t convert. After barely missing to the left of the cup, Woods taps in for another par.

No. 4 – Par 3, 180 yards – PAR

Woods finally made it onto the green in regulation with a perfect iron shot off the tee that cleared the bunker and settled down nicely about three yards from the cup. With his first birdie putt of the round, Tiger left his shot short and settled for par.

No. 3 – Par 4, 350 yards – PAR

Three holes, three bunkers. Woods took some frustration of the first two holes out on his tee shot here, pulling out a driver on the par 4 and launching his first shot into the gallery. From there it was back into the sand where Tiger finally caught a break. His best escape act yet put him three feet from the pin where he cleaned up easily for his first par of the day.

No. 2 – Par 5, 575 yards – BOGEY

There was no avoiding the sand at all on No. 2 on Saturday. Woods’ tee shot sank into the right bunker, and after a quick layup out, Tiger went right back into the trap with his third shot. He still nearly made par but again missed by an inch. It’s Tiger’s first bogey on a par 5 of the tournament. He had made par on No. 2 in each of his first two rounds.

No. 1 – Par 4, 445 yards – BOGEY

After another big drive to start the day landed just off to the left of the fairway, Woods’ second shot landed square in the bunker. He was able to escape the trap easily by going straight at the pin to set himself up for a putt to save par, but missed it to the left and settled for a bogey to go back to +5.

Pre-round remarks

Woods is grouped with Ian Poulter (+5) and scheduled to tee off at 10:40 a.m. EST. First-round leader Jordan Spieth finds himself tied for fourth (-4) behind leader Patrick Reed (-9), Marc Leishman (-7), Henrik Stenson (-5) and Rory McIlroy (-4).

Woods isn’t in contention at the moment, but with rainy conditions in Augusta and the standard unpredictability of the course, there’s always room for the type of chaos that could see him move up the leaderboard. That’s the good news. The bad news is that for that to happen, Woods will need to play his best round yet.
