Though you’ve probably never heard of 1,4-Dioxane, you’ve most likely used a beauty product that contains the chemical. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it’s “likely to be carcinogenic to humans” — and yet, it’s still found in small amounts as a byproduct in many cosmetics.

Thankfully, one beauty brand is going out of its way to avoid carcinogens like this one and keep its products clean. That company is Follain, a clean beauty retail brand that curates “only the best non-toxic products.”

Everything that Follain carries goes through a rigorous five-step approval process. According to founder Tara Foley, products are checked to make sure that they don’t contain ingredients that can be found on a restricted substances list. The products also “have to do what they claim to” and cannot be “irritating in terms of scent, experience [or] anything like that.”

Originally, Foley had no plans to be in the beauty industry, let alone start her own company. However, after learning about the staggering lack of regulations in the beauty industry, she decided to do something about it.

“I learned about these things, got super upset [and] wanted to share this information with as many people as possible [so] I started writing a blog and the blog gave me access to all of these brands in this space,” she explained. “I was like, I want to build a home for these brands.”

Today, Follain sells both its own in-house brand plus other clean brands like Indie Lee, ORGAID and Naturopathica. No matter what you buy from the brand, rest assured that your products are free of harmful ingredients.
