The Flight Attendant Season 2 Is Ready for Take Off
WARNING: Minor spoilers for The Flight Attendant Season 1 below.
Kaley Cuoco will be suiting up for another season of The Flight Attendant on HBO Max. The thriller series has officially been renewed by the streaming platform, the news arriving just a day after the Season 1 finale.
"To say that I am elated would be an understatement!" said Cuoco, who both stars in and executive produces the series, in a statement. "The positive response to our show has surpassed all of our expectations and I’m so proud of the entire team behind its success." She added that she and the team are "committed to delivering diverse and quality entertainment, including an exciting (and probably a little crazy) TFA season 2!"
The renewal should come as no surprise, given how warmly The Flight Attendant was received following its November premiere. In her first live-action role since The Big Bang Theory, Cuoco surprised and delighted audiences as Cassie Bowden, the titular flight attendant, who wakes up in her hotel in Bangkok to find her one-night stand dead in bed next to her. After she flees the scene, a frantic but fun dash around the world ensues as Cassie tries to piece the blurry night together and while personally coping with her own trauma and alcoholism.
Though the second season is still in its early stages—the release date is still unknown—here's what we know so far.
Cassie will face a "new adventure."
While the first season of The Flight Attendant was adapted from Chris Bohjalian bestselling book of the same name, Season 2 "will feature Cassie in a new adventure," HBO announced in a press release. But, that's all the network could share about the renewal so far.
There are plenty of places for the show to go after the finale. (Spoilers ahead!) In the last episode, viewers saw Cassie and mysterious spy-assassin Miranda (Michelle Gomez) carry out their plan to take down Felix (Colin Woodell), the man who killed Cassie's one-time lover Alex (Michael Huisman) and then followed her after she fled, leaving behind a string of kills. Cassie gets home safely and, with a new outlook on life, gets sober. But Miranda is nowhere to be found.
In the finale, we also learned that Cassie's friend Shane (Griffin Matthews) was a CIA agent the entire time, and that he was assigned to keep an eye on their coworker Megan's (Rosie Perez) shady side hustle (sharing top-secret information to the North Korean government.) In the show's final moments, Shane hints that the CIA might be on the lookout for a new recruit. Could that be where Cassie's adventure is headed?
Cuoco and showrunner Steve Yockey have already been exploring ideas.
"We have been having some conversations about what a second season would look like," Cuoco told The New York Times before the renewal was announced. She added that without Cassie's drinking and the emotional trauma that comes with it, her story could be completely different.
"What if we go down this route of her living this new lifestyle, trying to be sober and clean up her act, and there is no excuse anymore? And what does work now look like? What does love now look like?" Cuoco added.
"The drinking was a symptom of the emotional trauma, and all the other stuff was a byproduct of the drinking," Yockey added in the NYT. "So we’ll see when she gets sober. It doesn’t mean that the rest of the erratic behavior calms down."
One thing the duo confirmed for sure: Cassie is not pregnant. Although her character is expecting Alex's baby in the book, that plot point was "a bit too far" for the show, Cuoco said.
And where's Miranda, by the way?
We don't know yet! At the end of the eighth episode, she vanished, but left behind a note to Cassie saying she took Alex's secret stash of money and ran off. Gomez imagined that her character stole away to "somewhere fabulous." She joked to BAZAAR.com, "She's gone somewhere exotic, and she's gone in the opposite direction of the Long Island Rail Road tracks I'm sure."
In the book, Miranda dies, but that's not what we see on screen. Yockey hinted that there's a chance Miranda and Cassie could team up again in the future. "There’s always a world in which Miranda shows up, which is the kind of world I like to live in," he told The Times.
