The Five Biggest Hair Trends to Look for in 2019, According to Our Hair Editor

If there's anything that will give you a good indication of what hair trends are going to pop off in 2019, it's writing about hair over the course of 2018. After all, I, the Allure staff, and our amazing contributors painstakingly chronicled every new cut, dye job, buzz, bleach, and braid look from your favorite celebrities, Instagram tastemakers, and everyday people. We've also brought you the tea on all the exciting hair releases year-round. With all that info coming at you at lightning speed, you can't help but begin to see trends pop up.

Looking back on all the dopeness last year gave us in the hair department, 2019 is already shaping up to be an even more exciting year. I'll spare you my actual (very lengthy) list of hair-related things I'm looking forward to and boil it down to my favorites. Below, check out five things I can't wait to see in hair next year.

50 Shades of Red

Red is my absolute favorite color, so you already know I am delighted by the [shades of red(https://www.allure.com/gallery/most-flattering-red-hair-colors-for-every-skin-tone), auburn, and coral] (Pantone's Living Coral, to be exact) I've been seeing on celebrities lately.

Kate Bosworth switched her usual blonde to a coppery hue that is absolutely stunning. Julianne Hough also tried a spicy dark cinnamon color on for size in 2018, and it looks like there are no signs of red hair's popularity slowing down with the celeb set.

Just ask Amandla Stenberg, who recently dyed their hair a shade of auburn that is giving me inspiration for the hue I want for myself. Anne Hathaway also went red for a movie role and we're hoping she keeps it for a while in the new year. (Anne, if you're reading this, Girl, it's gorgeous on you.)

In 2019, I can't wait for more people to embrace that #redheadlife. Leighton Meester (who went platinum earlier in 2018), Elle Fanning, or even hair chameleon Solange Knowles are my top picks to try a version of the color on for size.

Proper Accessory Game

Hair accessories were absolutely everywhere this year. On the red carpets, we saw bloom-adorned messy buns, chic braid cuffs, ribbons, bows, and plenty of blingy bobby pins. So many, in fact, that Justine Marjan teamed up with Kitsch to give folks an affordable option for those bobby pins decorated with rhinestone wording — which, by the way, are utterly Instagrammable.

I don't see the obsession with hair accessories dying down in 2019, and I am all the way here for it. I predict more bobby pin art, more statement-making headpieces, and bows — lots of 'em. Something tells me we're about to see folks go all-out and get really creative with hair accessories. Bring it on.

Scalp Pull

We spend so much time fussing over how our actual hair strands look and feel, it's easy to forget that taking care of your scalp is key if you want your hair to flourish. The scalp is like the bottom scrapings of a pot of rice: oft-forgotten, but so, so major when you get to it.

Ouai's Scalp and Body scrub is one of my favorite of the brand's launches from 2018. Bumble and Bumble's Bb Scalp Detox snap, crackle, popped its way onto my crown and nabbed a Best of Beauty Award when it was done.

Davines's Let It Go Circle tingly deep conditioner has been saving me from that dry, itchy feeling through fall and now winter. And if you thought the party was over for 2019, think again. Kristin Ess has been teasing her brand-new scalp care collection on Instagram, meaning that part of your hair-care game is about to get more affordable.

The range is due to release just in time for you to make that New Year's resolution to actually pay attention to your scalp.

Doing Better at the Drugstore

Consumers are paying more attention than ever to what's going into their products and it looks like brands are finally listening. Toxic and irritating ingredients that would give anyone in the know pause are being slowly weeded out of some mass-market products. Of course, we've still got a long way to go when it comes to drugstore brands offering affordable and safe hair products, but we seem to be pacing toward that goal as brands take up the gauntlet and try to make their products more user-friendly.

Just to recap last year: Clairol kicked off 2018 with the revamp of its Nice 'n Easy hair-dye formulations, made with the ME+ dye molecule, as opposed to the PPD and PTD chemicals, which can cause allergies in some people. Wella later followed suit with its Koleston Perfect rollout. A new, sulfate-free version of Pantene's fan-favorite Gold Series shampoo hit shelves in January 2018.

Tresemmé won a Best of Beauty Award for its Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray, which releases a mist with fewer pollutants and it comes in a spray can around half the size of a standard one. Herbal Essences is entering the new year with new sulfate-free shampoo and conditioners, which were just certified by the Environmental Working Group.

In 2019, I anticipate an increasing number of drugstore brands will go the extra mile and make their products safer and better for consumers. In some ways they have no choice because the market is demanding it more and more, and making those changes to create safer products is worth it.

The K-pop Slay

I'll be the first to say that compared to the vast majority of K-pop fans, I know squat about it. I wouldn't even necessarily call myself a K-pop fan — I couldn't name a single song from any one of the groups and artists that make up the genre. However, because I am a human being who pays attention to things on the Internet (and I work with mega K-pop fan Devon Abelman), I know that hair is a major part of their image.

I love seeing all the ways the groups experiment with color (a signal that new music is on the way...OK, so that's two things I know about K-pop) and hair accessories. Jennie from Blackpink rocked colorful paper clips in her braids, and I've also been digging the Tinsel-like sparkly hair extensions that many K-pop stars have been rocking as of late. Oh, and as for the take on the K-pop mullet by EXO's Kai? May it never die.

Though I don't share their hair texture (my 3C curls would be absolutely destroyed if I tried to copy some of the dye jobs I've seen), there is no shortage of inspiration to be gleaned from K-pop style. I can't wait to see what other dope hairstyles, colors, and creative ways of accessorizing we'll see from the many (many, many) groups in the genre.
