A Fitness Influencer Demonstrated Why Fat Loss Can't Be Targeted

We’ve all been there – we’re happy with our shoulders, but could do with losing some fat from our stomachs. Content with our legs, but wouldn’t mind a bit less fat on our backs. We work out, eat smart and every time the scales show a reduction in weight we scrutinse that body part in the mirror. Has it magically shrunk while the rest of us stays the same?

Reality TV star and movement and nutrition influencer, David Birtwistle, has taken to Instagram to highlight just what an absurd notion this is. Responding to a question posed by a follower as to whether anything can be done to “target and eliminate back fat”, he creates the ultimate analogy as to why this is a pointless quest.

In the video, Birtwistle stands at a kitchen sink filled with water brandishing a mug. Patiently, he uses the mug to transfer water from the sink to a saucepan next to him – until the cameraman asks what he’s doing. (Continued below)

“Oh, I’m just trying to take the water out the corner of the sink”, deadpans Birtwistle, before agreeing it doesn’t seem to be working terribly well. After a beat, he continues: “It all seems to be going down at the same time. It’s kind of like fat loss isn’t it? You can’t take fat from one part of your body - it all has to go at the same time”.

Taking a sip from the mug, he drops it and walks off. Explaining the skit, Birtwistle captions the video “You can’t take water out the corner of the pool. You can’t spot reduce fat. Focus on the process, do the fundamentals and the results will come”.

A handy reminder that your body is a whole and weight loss is a holistic activity.
