Akron-based FirstEnergy is cutting about 90 employees company-wide, with another approximately 670 employees eligible for a voluntary retirement.

The changes are "part of FirstEnergy’s efforts to position the company for the future from an operational, financial and cultural perspective," Jennifer Young, FirstEnergy manager of external communications, said in an email.

Through the Program for Enhanced Employee Retirement (PEER), employees can voluntarily choose to retire in 2023.

About 670 employees are eligible for the program, and each will decide whether or not to participate. Eligible employees are active non-bargaining employees who are age 55 or older with at least 10 years of service as of Dec. 31, 2023. (Some employee groups, including those involved in day-to-day core operations serving customers, aren't eligible.)

There's also an involuntary separation of about 90 employees across the entire company of about 12,330.

"After a thorough review, the company also separated approximately 90 employees," Young said. "This action reinforces the company’s focus on continuous improvement and accountability.

"Although not easy, these steps will help FirstEnergy continue to put in place the tools, technology, processes and a continuous improvement mindset that we need to modernize our operations, provide an exceptional customer experience and foster a workplace where every employee contributes to our company’s success," Young said.
