The First 3 Photos of ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel, ‘House of the Dragon,’ Feature a Daenerys Look-Alike

If a recent investment in brooding glances and platinum blonde wigs wasn’t already an indication, allow us to break the news: Game of Thrones is on its way back to your screen, with a crew of dragons in tow.

Or, rather, it’s sort of on its way back. HBO is currently in production on a prequel series called House of the Dragon, based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood and set 300 years before the events of GoT. The streamer is leaning heavily on the assumption that the millions of viewers who professed undying love for Daenerys Targaryen will swear equal fealty to her ancestors, who make up the bulk of House of the Dragon’s cast and plot. If you had a hard enough time keeping your Varys from your Viserys or your Jorah from your Jaime from your Jon from your Joffrey, just wait until you meet the Targaryen family, whose names all sound the same and whose drama rivals that of The Real Housewives, just with more bloodshed.

Whether Westeros and its surrounding lands still have captivating stories to tell remains to be seen, especially given the disappointment that was GoT’s final season—a sting that, for many, has yet to wear off. But the fervor over new House of the Dragon photos released from set could serve as a bellwether, reminding jaded audiences of just how much they loved GoT at its best.

On May 5, HBO released three new photos from set, depicting Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen and Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen; Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake; and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower and Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.

The show is set to release in 2022, giving you plenty of time to read up on the differences between Rhaegar, Rhaenys, Rhaella, Rhaenyra, and Rhaena before the premiere. Enjoy!
