Fire shuts down Kawa Ramen and Sushi on Milwaukee's east side

A fire at Kawa Ramen and Sushi, at 2321 N. Murray Ave. on Tuesday night affected surrounding businesses and residential apartments.

Selina Zheng, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband, Lin Xiao, said the fire happened between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured in the fire, Zheng said.

Kawa Ramen and Sushi, where the fire started, suffered most of the damage and will be closed at least nine months. The cause of the fire is still undetermined, one of the owners said Wednesday.

Another Kawa location is operating out of the 3rd St. Market Hall, 275 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Tavolino MKE, 2315 N. Murray Ave., will be closed "a couple of days" as owners clean up from the fire. The restaurant didn't have any extensive damage, according to its Facebook page.

Izzy Hops Swig & Nosh, 2311 N. Murray Ave., will also be closed until mid- to late June, according to its Facebook page.
