The final girls are coming to HBO Max. Grady Hendrix’s book The Final Girl Support Group has only been out a week, but an on-screen adaptation is in the works. The best-selling horror novel is coming to HBO Max as a series. Charlize Theron, Andy Muschietti, and Barbara Muschietti are producing. As the title suggests, the novel follows a group of women who survived horrific massacres. They became minor celebrities during the ’80s and ’90s. The six women meet regularly in Los Angeles until suddenly, one woman misses a meeting. Then they discover someone is coming after the final girls.

Sounds intriguing, right? And with the Muschietti siblings and Theron backing the project, it sounds like the adaptation is already off to a promising start.

Here’s the novel’s full plot synopsis:

Lynnette Tarkington is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. For more than a decade, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable, working to put their lives back together. Then one woman misses a meeting, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again, piece by piece.

But the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds, how dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Andy Muschietti will direct the first episode. No word if Theron will star in the series in addition to her role as executive producer. AJ Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas are also executive producing under Theron’s Denver and Delilah Films. Irene Yeung is producing for the Muschietti siblings’ Double Dream, and Adam Goldworm for Aperture Entertainment. Hendrix is also executive producing the adaptation.

Considering the buzz we’ve heard around the book, we can’t wait to hear more about the adaptation.
