Will Ferrell jokes his iconic 'Elf' character helps his sons score in soccer

Having Buddy the Elf as your dad comes with some serious soccer perks.

Will Ferrell, who starred in the 2003 Christmas comedy "Elf," stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show Friday to explain how his iconic role gives his kids an advantage in their soccer games.

The actor is father to three boys: 10-year-old Axel, 13-year-old Mattias and 15-year-old Magnus.

In the classic holiday film, Ferrell played Buddy, a human (who believes he's an elf) exploring New York City after being raised in Santa Claus' workshop.

"So there's another role that I heard about," asked Jennifer Aniston, who was subbing in for host DeGeneres during the episode. "Your sons are into sports now?"

"They're all playing sports," Ferrell replied. "A lot of soccer."

Ferrell then explained how in the American Youth Soccer Organization, parents are expected to earn "volunteer points" by offering to referee their kids' games.

"And so, a lot of times I have to wear (a referee uniform)," Ferrell said, as a photo appeared of the 52-year-old in black cleats, black athletic shorts and a glaringly yellow long-sleeve shirt.

"Now that's amazing," Aniston said. "Come on, how cute!"

But even in his referee garb, the famous dad said he still gets recognized – especially by the kids on the opposing team.

"I usually get through half a game before one of the kids on an opposing team is like, 'Are you the elf? What are you doing here?' " Ferrell said. "But they're in the middle of a game, and they'll stop and be like, 'He's the elf!' And the coach is like, 'Shut up! Get the ball!' "

"So it's like a distraction," Aniston said. "So it's almost an advantage for your children."

"Oh, it's all tactical, yeah," Ferrell riffed.
