Fenty Beauty Just Launched Its First-Ever Mascara — and We Put It to the Test

Despite the countless rumors and desperate pleas from fans, 2019 came and went without a new Rihanna album — but we did get fresh Fenty Beauty product drops.

In the first few weeks of 2020, the cosmetics brand — which disrupted the beauty industry back in 2017 when it launched a 40-shade foundation range — has already released two entirely new categories to its collection. Along with the Flywear Eyeliner Pencil, Fenty's first-ever mascara is here: Full Frontal Volume Mascara.

Much like the rest of the line, Fenty's debut mascara also comes with innovation. The water-resistant, ink-black formula is designed to volumize, lengthen, curl, and lift lashes, but what makes Fenty's mascara so special is its wand, which features a fat-to-flat brush. The fat side is meant to boost volume and lift lashes, while the flat side defines and curls them.

But we wanted to know if it could really deliver.

That's why four InStyle editors with very specific lash needs put Fenty's first mascara to the test. Here, our honest thoughts on Fenty's Full Frontal Volume Mascara.

Fenty Beauty Full Frontal Volume, Lift, & Curl Mascara is available for $24 at Sephora.com.

The brush took a second for me to get used to, so my first few strokes were a disaster! But once I got the hang of it, I ended up loving this mascara. It gave me a light, feathery finish, my lashes were separated (but still voluminous), and there was no flaking by the end of the day. An added bonus: It doesn’t leave your lashes feeling hard like many other formulas do. I’m definitely going to be keeping this gem in my makeup bag.

I’m typically a drugstore mascara, or whatever sample I can find kind of person. But the issue is that I don’t really like to wear that much makeup, so mascara is crucial. The Fenty mascara is the perfect one for everyday wear. It doesn’t look like much because its light and airy, but it's enough to really make your lashes stand out with one or two swipes. I also love that the bottle is big and will last a while!

Without mascara, I look like I have no lashes, so I liked that this formula was light and un-clumpy — it gave me a “your-lashes-but-better” look with just one coat. It made my lashes look feathery without being spidery, but I did find that it smudged onto my undereye area a little more than my usual Ilia mascara does. Still a big fan, though!

I have to start by saying I have THE shortest, stubbiest little lashes ever, but the Fenty mascara seriously came through for my whittle baby hairs. Not only did it give my lashes a decent lift, it also fattened each hair up, adding much-needed volume. I might have to start cheating on my usual mascara for the new Fenty drop.
