Federal investigators looking into New Castle train derailment, lawmakers calling for reform
Federal investigators are looking into what caused a nine-car train derailment in New Castle, Lawrence County, before midnight Wednesday.
Officials tell Channel 11 no hazardous material was spilled but was being hauled in other cars.

Lawmakers in Washington, D.C., are calling for reform.
Sen. Bob Casey tweeted, “We’re grateful that there have been no injuries reported - but these derailments are becoming far too common.”

Sen. John Fetterman released a statement saying, “It’s the same s***, different day for Norfolk Southern. It’s time to finally hold Norfolk Southern and the big rail companies accountable for the harm they have caused in East Palestine and Darlington Township, and the harm they continue to cause with this dangerous, reckless, and selfish behavior.”
Both senators called for lawmakers to pass the Railway Safety Act. It’s legislation that has already passed the House of Representatives and advanced out of Committee Wednesday.
Channel 11 has been in contact with the NTSB and will pass along any new information as we learn it.
