The FDA Is Investigating an Outbreak Likely Tied to Bagged Salads Sold at Stores Like Aldi
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating an outbreak "likely" tied to bagged salads sold at Aldi, Jewel-Osco, and Hy-Vee.
The agencies issued an alert late last week warning customers that Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad from Aldi, Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad from Hy-Vee, and Signature Farms Brand Garden Salad from Jewel-Osco are suspected to be tied to an outbreak of Cyclospora. Both Hy-Vee and Jewel-Osco have recalled these products this week, which were manufactured by Fresh Express, and the CDC and FDA have advised customers in certain states not to eat the aforementioned salads from all three retailers.
The Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salads were sold in stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Brand Garden Salads were sold in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa and the Aldi Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad was sold at stores in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri. Jewel-Osco stated that it was recalling the salads "in cooperation with the Fresh Express recall of bagged salads potentially linked to an outbreak of Cyclospora infections." Aldi told the FDA that it has removed the salad from its shelves. The investigation is ongoing.
Cyclospora is described as a microscopic parasite that can infect your intestinal tract and cause loose stool. The outbreak has caused 122 people to become ill in seven states (Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin) and 19 of them to be hospitalized. There have been no reported deaths.
