Joaquin Phoenix has kept his relationship history fairly private over the years, making his romance with Rooney Mara—who may or may not be his wife—all the more intriguing. Has the eccentric Beau is Afraid actor found his quirky leading-lady for life?

Here is everything to know about Joaquin Phoenix’s relationship with his one-time co-star and fellow vegan, Rooney Mara.

Who is Joaquin Phoenix's wife?

Several reports have come out that Joaquin Phoenix has secretly married Rooney Mara, his romantic partner of seven years. Phoenix and Mara have yet to confirm their marriage, but in a March 2022 interview with Italian Magazine Best Movie about the film C’mon C’mon, Phoenix referred to the Oscar-nominated actress as his wife, saying, “He [director Mike Mills] invited me to his house and we started discussing why he wanted to make this film with me and eventually I listened to my wife, who is always right, and I agreed."

While this reference isn’t ironclad proof that the two have tied the knot, it would make sense that the couple, who got engaged in 2019, would marry with little-to-no fanfare given how private they have been about their relationship thus far.

Still, he was immediately interested in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo actress.

"She's the only girl I ever looked up on the internet," he confessed. "We were just friends, email friends. I'd never done that. Never looked up a girl online."

In 2016, the two connected romantically while co-starring in Mary Magdalene together. They have been together ever since. Mara and Phoenix got engaged in May 2019.
