As Valerie Bertinelli navigates a series of recent life events, she knows she has the support of her fans behind her.
On June 9, the Food Network host joined Hoda Kotb on the Today show to discuss what’s been going on in her life since the last time the NBC star saw her more than two years. From the moment The One Day at a Time actress stepped back inside Studio 1A, she couldn’t help but become emotional speaking about her late ex-husband Eddie Van Halen and their son Wolfie. The legendary rock guitarist died from cancer in October 2020 at the age of 65.
After reflecting on what she had learned about life following Eddie’s death, the Valerie’s Home Cooking star got candid about what she imagines her relationship status to be in the future. In May, she filed for divorce from her second husband Tom Vitale after 11 years of marriage, and she’s not looking for another partner.

“I am gonna be more than happy to be happily divorced and spend the rest of my life alone,” Valerie said on the NBC show. "I'll be happy that way. Well, with my six cats and my dog and my son, and hopefully one day grandchildren."
She also shut down the idea of falling in love again. "Oh God, no," Valerie continued. "Because of the challenges that I'm going through right now, because divorce sucks. I can't imagine ever trusting anyone again to let into my life. So I have some trust issues that I'm sure I'm going to have to get past."
Reacting to her words, Valerie’s fans rallied around her online and shared heartfelt and supportive messages in Today’s Twitter comments. “I’m sorry to hear this, but now it’s your time! Be the beautiful and inspiring you, that you are ❤️,” one person wrote. “You are a survivor and NOTHING will stop you from being happy and whole,” another added. “Valerie, I hope you know how much strength you are giving us who have no voice. We who love you are encouraged by your vulnerability and know we too will be OK. Happily single,” a different fan said.
Speaking to Hoda and Jenna Bush Hager about why she chooses to share her inner thoughts with the world, Valerie admitted that it helps her.
“When I do say it out loud and so many people reach out and say ‘Oh I feel the same way.’ I feel like I’m doing it in a selfish way because it makes me feel not so alone," Valerie said. "It makes me feel better to be able to get all of the mess out of my mouth and it doesn’t sit here.”
