  • ABC announced that Tyra Banks will replace Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews as host of Dancing with the Stars.

  • On Tuesday, Bergeron tweeted that he was informed the show would continue without him after a 15-year run as host.

  • Fans have mixed reactions about the change.

On Tuesday, ABC revealed that Tyra Banks will be replacing Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews as host of Dancing with the Stars. She will be the first Black host and the first solo host in the show’s history.

BBC Studios’ LA Productions GM Valerie Bruce called Banks “an icon whose powerful presence, trademark confidence, and industry-leading achievements inspire us” in a statement. She said BBC, which produces the show, is proud to partner with ABC in welcoming her. “This represents a landmark moment in our 28 seasons producing Dancing with the Stars as we take this iconic show in a new creative direction. We offer our sincere thanks to Tom and Erin, whom we will always consider part of the Dancing with the Stars family.”

In an interview with Good Morning America on Wednesday, Banks said that she’s excited to host and co-produce the show, especially as the first Black solo host. “I like breaking those doors down, so that we don’t have any more firsts,” she said. “But it’s nice to be first, so that you can open that door and let so many other people in after you—so I’m excited.”

In a statement, Banks said that she’s been a fan of Dancing with the Stars from the beginning, and acknowledged that she has big shoes to fill. “Tom has set a powerful stage, and I’m excited to continue the legacy and put on my executive producer and hosting hats,” she said.

Bergeron, who hosted the popular dance competition in its debut season in 2005, shared his thoughts about the change on Tuesday in a Tweet. “It’s been an incredible 15-year run and the most unexpected gift of my career,” he tweeted.

Andrews, who has co-hosted DWTS alongside Bergeron for six years, also bid farewell to the show on Instagram. “Those years wouldn’t have been as special without my loving host Tom Bergeron, the talented dancers, and witty judges. I will always cherish my days on that set, even if I wasn’t the best at walking in heals,” she wrote.

Some Dancing with the Stars fans were excited to see Banks as the show’s new host. “Yay!!!! She is going to be such a joy to watch!❤️❤️,” one fan said. “I LOVE Tyra! She has done such an amazing job hosting shows like America’s Next Top Model and America’s Got Talent.”

Other DWTS fans were completely shocked and disappointed to see Bergeron and Andrews go after all this time. “Tom was the heart and soul of this show and y’all seriously messed up cutting out someone who’s been loyal to you for 15 YEARS. So disappointing,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “This show is gonna tank without Tom and Erin,” another fan wrote, while someone added that “Tom is irreplaceable.”

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke acknowledged Bergeron and Andrews’ impact on the show after all these years. “Tom has been an integral part of the ABC family for nearly two decades, from hosting AFV to Dancing with the Stars,” she said in a statement. “We are grateful for all he and Erin have done to make Dancing a success. As we gear up for the show’s 29th season, we can’t wait to welcome Tyra Banks to our Dancing stage.”
