Family, We Need to Talk About Kevin on Last Night's 'This Is Us'

One of the best things about This Is Us has always been its honesty with its characters and their individual struggles. On season three so far, we’ve seen Kate go through IVF, Toby battling depression, and Randall coming face-to-face with his anxiety to win an election. Heck, we’ve even seen good ‘ol Miguel giving his children a verbal smack down in defense of Rebecca at Thanksgiving.

This week’s episode was no different, though it returned to one of the show’s darkest demons: addiction. Following an unsuccessful reunion with Nicky, the Big Three-and Rebecca, who also showed up-head home. Randall and Kate carpool with a detour to what remains of the Pearson lot (pretty much nothing, as a new house has since been built on top of the ashes), while Kevin ends up driving back with Rebecca.

Before the episode ends, the show delivers a soul crushing flashback to just hours before, when Kevin was at Nicky’s trailer, alone and in front of his uncle’s half-empty bottle of whiskey. Was it half-empty before? Doesn’t matter. In the next frame, Kevin takes a swig, followed by another; in the car, Rebecca tells Kevin she’s really proud of what he tried to do for Nicky as Kevin holds onto his latest secret.

As fans know, the next episode will finally shine a light on Beth’s backstory, which means we probably won’t check in with Kevin for a couple of weeks. Will he tell someone about his relapse? How much does Zoe know about his history with addiction? Will we see more of Nicky? And will the show give us more Rebecca and Kevin moments, past and present? (Anyone else tear up when Rebecca found out Kevin went to the library to do research on his favorite baseball player?)
