Heidelberg: from Old City to the University, Germany's Perfect Storybook Town

Heidelberg Castle

As the city’s landmark, Heidelberg Castle is just about as old as Heidelberg itself. Once home to royalty for about 400 years, this hilltop castle has seen its share of structural add-ons and damage from wars, fires, and even being hit by lightning. Today, it’s a mixture of period buildings connected by an inner courtyard. Take a tour of its interior to see residential wings and a wine cellar holding the world’s largest wine barrel. Outdoors, get a great landscape view of Heidelberg from the Grand Terrace or gardens. The best way to get to the castle is by funicular.
