When a trailer has the words ‘Red Band’ in it, you know it’s going to be good. And the fourth Expendables movie keeps the trend alive, featuring bad guys exploding under gatling gun fire, blood spraying the lens after knife attacks, and a man in a high-speed vehicle losing his head after bonking it on a metal bar.
While gloriously gratuitous, the decision to make Expend4bles a hard R follows criticism of the previous films for being a little toothless. As the trailer narrator proudly points out, “We heard you loud and clear. ‘Please make Expendables 4 rated R. There better be violence, and lots of it. I want all the blood and guts.’”
Along with plenty of over-the-top ‘80s-style action violence, there’s star power in spades. The film features Jason Statham, Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, Andy Garcia, and Sylvester Stallone.
As per the official description: “Reuniting as the team of elite mercenaries, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, and Sylvester Stallone are joined for the first time by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, and Andy Garcia. Armed with every weapon they can get their hands on and the skills to use them, The Expendables are the world’s last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give “new blood” a whole new meaning.”
As news comes that Zack Synder wants to direct a Gears of War movie, he'd do well to cast any one of these grizzled action stars.
Expend4bles opens in theaters on September 22, 2023. Watch the trailer below.
