Expect delays: Sanibel city officials announce FDOT temporary work on Sanibel Causeway

Sanibel city officials announced Tuesday the Florida Department of Transportation will work on the main bridge leading to the island.

The repairs to the Sanibel Causeway will require traffic in both directions to be reduced to one lane. The required work is expected to conclude by 4 p.m. today.

Officials say motorists should expect heavy traffic and delays.

The 3-mile causeway, which includes islands and over-water spans, was battered and broken by Hurricane Ian in three places.

The first of the multi-phase repair process was complete Oct. 19, after temporary fixes allowed vehicle traffic, Florida Department of Transportation Engineer Kati Sherrard said.

Next phase would include more shoring up and stabilization, which will be followed by permanent repairs to make the causeway more resilient.

The whole project should be done by next October, officials said.
