In this day and age of trying to find the perfect series to escape, you might be surprised to hear that one of the best shows to watch for this is actually a reality show. Netflix's Deaf U, which will be released on October 9, gives viewers an inside look at Galludet University, one of the few Deaf colleges in the country, and its students.
Thanks to activist, America's Next Top Model winner, and Galludet University alum Nyle DiMarco, the series gives us an inside look at some of the college's current students, their lives, and how being Deaf has affected them. From the Deaf "Elite," those who were born into big Deaf families, to students who finally learned how to sign for the first time at college, Deaf U lets us see how different their lives are from each other despite what outside viewers might think.
In this clip exclusive to Seventeen, Renate talks about meeting her girlfriend for the first time and the difficulties of not being able to have a conversation at a nail salon. It's something so simple that hearing viewers might be super surprised to see, but it also hasn't really been talked in the mainstream for a long time.
The biggest beauty of the show is the fact that it doesn't focus entirely on their Deafness. If anything, the show really gives us a look into the lives of various college students. From their hookups to confronting their past to falling in love, there's nothing off the table. While they do talk about their Deafness and how that affected their lives, it reminds outside viewers that it's not the only defining part of their identity. And trust us when they say that you are going to be so invested in their stories. There's some moments that you won't see coming and you'll definitely want to keep some tissues on hand for others. In the end, you'll mostly be sad about how short the series is and you'll want to follow all your faves on Instagram.
No matter if this is the first time you're hearing about Galludet or if you know someone who goes there already, you won't be able to stop watching until it's all over. So get ready for your next big binge, because Deaf U will definitely be it.
