EXCLUSIVE: Christian Siriano Can’t Get on Board with This Fashion Trend

As the host (and a former contestant) of Project Runway and the head of his own fashion line, Christian Siriano knows a thing or 20 about fashion. And while he recognizes trends are trends for a reason, there’s one he just can’t bring himself to champion.

The 33-year-old designer recently chatted with PureWow about the 2019 Met Gala and his new partnership with Check Your Sweat, an initiative that strives to empower people with hyperhidrosis. When conversing with this man who cites Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and Cardi B, among many others as his clients, we couldn’t help but wonder where Siriano stands on trends. Does he detest them? Does he consider them in his design process? We learned all that and more.

When it comes to conceiving his designs, Siriano doesn’t think about trend cycles. Instead, he finds inspiration from architecture, art and wildlife, and goes from there.

“If I think about anything it’s what’s successful for us,” he explained. “‘Are suits doing well?’ And if they are, we’ll ramp up the suits. ‘Are cocktail dresses selling?’ I think more about what our customer really wants. But every now and then, [I throw in] something cool and trendy. I just don’t think about [my designs] as much as you would think. I just make what I want to make, and hope people like it.”

Separate from his work, Siriano does have some thoughts about a trend that’s been around for a hot minute.

I’m not a big fan of athleisure to be honest,” Siriano admitted.

He went on to reason, “I know people love it, and I like it, too. But I’m not the biggest fan of wearing it all the time. We don’t have to live our lives in workout clothes, even though I know they’re comfortable and fabulous.”

Honestly, we have to agree. We love leggings as much as the next gal, but a well-tailored dress can be just as comfortable. Just saying.
