Exclusive: The Cast of "On My Block" Opens Up About That Heartbreaking Finale

From Seventeen

*Major spoilers for season 3 of On My Block below!*

As On My Block fans have learned over the past few seasons, every finale ends with a twist. From leaving us wondering whether it was Ruby or Olivia who was shot dead at her quinceañera to the Core Four's mysterious kidnapping in season two, something huge always left fans wanting to come back to see what happened next to their favorite characters. But even hardcore fans couldn't have expected the final scene in the season three finale.

Monse officially left for boarding school and while Jasmine, Ruby, Jamal, and Cesar all assured her that their friendships would still be intact with her no longer there, the final time jump showed them apart and no longer speaking to each other. Fans weren't the only ones surprised about the finale.

"I thought it was crazy. Every year I'm like, 'Okay, what show are we on?' This year, [the writers] are just not afraid to be honest about what goes on in a real friend group that goes through stuff that is traumatic and as they're growing up," Brett Gray, who plays Jamal, revealed to Seventeen in an exclusive interview.

"We didn't get the last script until like four days before we started shooting. So, we had no idea what was gonna happen, where our characters were gonna go, or the time jump," said Diego Tinoco, who plays Cesar, to Seventeen. "We didn't know any of that stuff."

While it was certainly heartbreaking to see each of these characters go their separate ways, it was Cesar's ending that surprised fans the most. The final shot of the season showed Cesar as a member of The Santos, the very gang he grew up in and avoided until everything that happened in season three.

"When I shot the last scene, I was like, 'I don't want to shoot this,'" Diego continued.

Based on the final shot in the episode, it seems like part of Cesar's new role is triggered by heartbreak over his ex-girlfriend, Monse. Known as the very glue that brought the group together, Monse leaving was the final thing that caused the group to finally break after everything that happened.

"I think this is the most that we've ever hit so close to home in terms of these things can actually happen. When I read the episode I thought to myself, 'Wow, there could be a moment where, even though we're all close onscreen and offscreen, we drift apart and we no longer had the same close bond that we have.' So, it was very heartbreaking for me to read that episode, and I would never want that to happen," Sierra Capri, who plays Monse, revealed to Seventeen.

While Monse and Cesar's relationship ended up breaking apart, Jasmine and Ruby got closer together.

"I don't think I'm surprised because even the fans spoke out a lot on why Ruby and Jasmine have to end up together. I loved how like Ruby Season One was into Olivia, because she's so pretty and she's the new girl," Jason Genao, who plays Ruby told Seventeen. "Jasmine's not really his type and so he pushes her aside. I think Ruby and Jasmine ending up together shows the growth and also the type of mindset that Ruby has. He's like, 'I want to be with jasmine because there's no one who has made me happier.'"

In season three, Jasmine not only got more screen time, but she also got a brand new BFF to hang out with: Monse.

"She's [Jasmine] been longing for this connection with Monse in seasons one and two. She was saying mean things and trying to poke at her, but that was just because she was trying to build a wall because she wanted to be friends with her so badly," Jessica Marie Garcia, who plays Jasmine, revealed to Seventeen.

While it seems like the friendship might be over, both Jessica and Sierra agreed that the two friends might still be going strong despite the rift within the group.

"If you pay close attention, you don't really see [them breaking apart]. So, I'm like, we might still be friends and she might be visiting me on her breaks. You never know. I don't know," Sierra said.

While not a part of the Core More, Spooky (AKA Oscar) has also played a big role this season. As one of the leaders of the Santos and Cesar's big brother, his plan to stop Cuchillos with the 19th Street Gang worked out. But even though he's trying to protect his little brother, that doesn't mean that things have always been so great between them.

"Cesar has been through so much sh*t because of Spooky. And I want to see Cesar just go off on Spooky. I want to see them explore that. You know, to really hold up the mirror and say look what you made me become," Diego said. "As an actor [I want that], just because it's juicy. A a human being, I want them to just correspond with each other and just love each other and, and just become the brothers that they were meant to be."

Oscar's fate was also revealed in the special time-jump, showing that he is now away from the gang and that his dream of having a house, wife, and kids all came true.

"That was the first scene that we shot." Julio Macias who plays Spooky revealed to Seventeen. "My hair had grown out. I took a nasty fall last year, and so pretty much the entire year I spent in recovery and just seeing who I wanted to be as a man. So I was very happy to see Oscar in a way, in a fantasy, get what he — I guess deserve is a strong word — but I guess what we romanticize him to be."

"Now, I haven't talked to anybody, but just knowing how this show goes, it can't be that happy, right? How do you afford that house? How do you support that girl? You know, is his family safe? He clearly got some tattoos removed, but I mean, how do you go from gang-banging to that in almost no time?" Julio continued.

Even with the season finale driving them apart, if the show gets renewed for a fourth season, the cast is hoping that the crew gets back together.

"I would hope that the fact that they've grown up together and they have so much history, I would hope that that brings them back. I feel like something's going to happen that brings them back together for one last thing," Sierra said. "I don't know what that thing is going to be, but I'm excited."

"That's exactly what we're all hoping for," Jessica replied. "Three more seasons, and a movie."

"Right?" Sierra said. "Let's make this happen!"
