  • Ewan McGregor will appear in in upcoming Disney+ series centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

  • It will be his first time playing live-action Obi-Wan since 2005.

  • McGregor told a story about wearing the Obi-Wan robes on the set of The Mandalorian during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

We've known for a little bit now that Ewan McGregor will finally be donning his Jedi robes again for a Disney+ limited series centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi. We've also known for 5 years now that he's been back in the Star Wars fold, ever since his brief voiceover cameo in The Force Awakens. But one thing we didn't know? That McGregor was there on the set of The Mandalorian, in costume, as Obi-Wan Kenobi. And, now, well, we're really curious.

Deborah Chow, who became the first female director in Star Wars history when she directed the third episode of The Mandalorian's first season (and also directed the seventh episode), will also be directing all of the as-of-now untitled Obi-Wan series. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McGregor said that at one point, the Obi-Wan series was going to be an Obi-Wan film, and he did some tests with Chow; tests that happened to be on The Mandalorian set, with him in costume and in character.

"We did it properly," he said. "It was a funny moment walking on set, because it was a lot of The Mandalorian crew, and I walked on–for me it was a big moment. I walked into the dressing room and there were my beige cloaks and my belts and boots and it was like–'oh my god'."

McGregor, who says he thought The Mandalorian was "really good," also said that his new series would be adapting some of the show's same technology, and that he's happy its taking a TV format ahead of film because "it gives us more space." McGregor has done limited series TV acting before, appearing as twins in Season 3 of FX's standout anthology Fargo.

There's no word as of yet when the Obi-Wan series will hit Disney+, but he did reveal that it is currently being planned as a standalone, one-time event, and that filming is set to begin in Spring 2021.

Will Ewan McGregor Appear in The Mandalorian Season 2 as Obi-Wan?

While it doesn't seem likely that Obi-Wan will appear in The Mandalorian—the series takes place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, for one, meaning Obi-Wan is dead—the fact that he's admitted that he's been both on the show's set and in his iconic costume makes us wonder.

Maybe there's some sort of vision or flashback in Season 2? We've heard that Ahsoka Tano, the powerful Jedi-adjacent character from Star Wars: The Clone Wars could be featured in Season 2, potentially played by Rosario Dawson. Maybe Obi-Wan figures in here? Or perhaps Baby Yoda channels in to Old Yoda somehow and Obi-Wan is along for the ride. We don't know, but it can't hurt to speculate.
