Seymour's Bay is generally based on Ocean City, New Jersey. It also has elements that are found in many New England area shore towns. Many of the houses, however, are based on architecture used in San Francisco, which is where Loren Bouchard was living when he developed the show.

In an episode showing the Belcher family traveling to see Linda's parents in Florida, a map revealed them apparently beginning their trip from New Jersey.
