After a lot anticipation, David Beckham's four-part documentary Beckham has finally dropped on Netflix, giving us an exclusive look at one of the world's most famous footballers. From his fallouts with Sir Alex Ferguson, to the depression he suffered after being sent off from the 1998 Argentina game, David holds nothing back. And perhaps one of the subjects David and wife Victoria Beckham are most honest about is David's alleged affair in 2004, which he has always denied.

The couple talk candidly about the difficult times in their marriage, with David saying: "Erm… there were some horrible stories that were difficult to, erm, deal with. It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage." And Victoria added: "It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us."

So when did the news of David's alleged affair first surface? And what have the couple said about it since? Here's what you need to know.

What was David Beckham's alleged affair?

In 2004, five years after David and Victoria tied the knot, Rebecca Loos, who had worked as David's personal assistant, claimed she had an affair with David.

She shared the alleged story with the now defunct newspaper News of The World and Sky News, telling the broadcaster David was an "amazing lover". According to reports Loos said the pair first got together in a nightclub in Madrid, she added: "We were just locked into each other all night conversation-wise, other people noticed… we just connected.

"I think the chemistry between David and I was so strong… people were aware and they weren’t very happy."

The affair was said to have taken place while David was playing for Real Madrid in 2003. David has always denied the allegations.

What have David and Victoria Beckham said about the affair allegations?

David has always denied the allegations, calling them "ludicrous" and said he was "happily married".

In a statement issued at the time in 2004, David said: "During the past few months I have become accustomed to reading more and more ludicrous stories about my private life.

"The simple truth is that I am very happily married. I have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is nothing any third party can do to change these facts."

At the time Victoria did not comment on the allegations and didn't address them until an interview in 2007, where she said it was a "really tough time" for the couple's marriage.

She said: "I’m not going to lie. It was a really tough time. No one said marriage was going to be easy. Yes, there have been bumps along the road.

"But the fact is we’ve come out of everything we’ve been through stronger and happier."

Since then the couple have remained quiet on the allegations until David's four-part documentary Beckham aired.

Director of the documentary, Fisher Stevens told The Sunday Times he bridged the subject of the affair allegations, by asking David "How did your marriage stay together?" and then waited to see where David took the subject.

At the time of the alleged affair David was living in Madrid while playing for the team Real Madrid, while Victoria was living in London with the couple's two sons Beckham and Romeo.

In the documentary, when asked how their marriage survived David said: "I don't know how we got through it, in all honestly. Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we're fighters and at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family.

"And what we had was worth fighting for. There were some days that I would wake up and think, 'How am I going to go to work? How am I going to walk on to that training pitch? How am I going to look as if nothing's wrong?' I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes, 'How am I going to do this?'"

Victoria and the two boys soon relocated to Madrid, and during the documentary Victoria explained how unhappy she was to leave the UK.

She said: "As soon as I could get the kids in school, we then move full-time. Did I resent David? If I am being totally honest, yes I did. It was probably, if I'm being honest, the most unhappy I have ever been in my life. It wasn't that I felt unheard because I chose to internalise a lot of it because I was always mindful of a focus that he needed."

Since the alleged affair the couple have gone onto have two more children Cruz and Harper, and are now approaching their 25th wedding anniversary.
