Everything You Need to Know Before ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 2 Finally Hits Netflix

Here you are, minding your business, totally unaware that Umbrella Academy season 2 will be on Netflix before you know it. All your weird, dysfunctional, superhero family dreams are going to come true in a matter of mere weeks. Thank god!

As you probably know by now if you watched season 1, the series is based on comic books written by Gerard Way, aka your emo-phase-era crush from My Chemical Romance, so, like…what’s not to love? If you haven’t already crushed season 1, do it right now and then come back here for the scoop on season 2.

Okay, when is season 2 gonna be on Netflix?

July 31! That was easy. And it can’t come soon enough, seriously.

What shenanigans are the super-sibs getting into now?

By the looks of it, some time travel. Remember how sh*t went down at the end of the first season? Vanya (Ellen Page) was about to end the world by playing violin and then Five (Aidan Gallagher) used his powers to take everybody back in time? All they have to do is stop that apocalyptic concerto from happening, right?

Wrong. According to Netflix’s description for season 2:

“The time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three-year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain they’re the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which—spoiler alert!—turns out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline.”

So they have to stop two apocalypses now. Chill. There are also Swedish assassins after the Hargreeves siblings, apparently, according to the ’flix. Extremely chill!

Which comic in the series is it based on? (And should I read it first?)

I don’t have mind-reading powers, personally, but Entertainment Weekly made the connection that Volume II of the comic book is titled Dallas. It’s not rocket science. They literally put two and two together.

As for whether or not you need to read the comic to understand the show…not really! It might actually spoil it if you read before, but live your truth. Whatever floats your boat.

Everybody’s coming back, though, right?

It does look like some characters are not returning, like Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige). But we are going to see a lot more of Ben (Justin H. Min) in season 2, and there are new characters played by Ritu Arya from Last Christmas, Marin Ireland from Sneaky Pete, and Yusef Gatewoof from The Originals.

Is there a trailer? Give me *something*!

Not yet, although the date announcement/socially distanced dance party video was adorbs.

All we have right now is this groovy Umbrella Academy season 2 poster, which has so many clues hidden in the reflections of those sunglasses. Look closely and you’ll see references to John F. Kennedy, the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights movement, amongst other things.
