We’ve officially made it through Hot Girl Summer, with the first autumn breeze ushering in the advent of Gothic Girl Fall (not to be confused with Goth Girl Fall, which peaked in 2016). Gothic Girl Fall is all about long sleeves, neck ruffs, demurely downcast eyes, and the distinct sense that a ghost might be haunting your attic. This style finds its apotheosis in the upcoming film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 Gothic novel Rebecca, which takes the reins from Alfred Hitchcock’s Oscar-winning 1940 version. Here, we’ve rounded up everything we know so far about the film.
Who’s Playing Whom?
Lily James, best known for her roles in Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and, of course, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, will play the lead role of Mrs. de Winter, with Armie Hammer playing her husband, Maxim. Ann Dowd, Kristin Scott Thomas, Keeley Hawes, and Sam Riley will also appear. (No word yet on who will play the deceased Rebecca de Winter in flashbacks, even though it is—as Beanie Feldstein once memorably screamed—the titular role.)
Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High Rise, Free Fire) has been tapped to direct, with Jane Goldman (X-Men, Woman in Black, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) writing the script.
Who’s Designing the Costumes?
Rick Owens, we can only pray. (Just kidding, there’s no word yet.)
