JoJo Siwa Joins ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ Season 3 in Surprise New Trailer

Well, everyone, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series just wrapped up season 2, and let’s be honest: We’re pretty invested in the teen drama! If you’re not into it for the catchy original tunes throughout the season (have you even heard the adorable new duet between music’s newest superstar Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett?), it’s for all the shenanigans these high schoolers are engaging in.

Let’s do a recap on what’s happening with our fellow Wildcats. School is back for a brand-new semester, and Beauty and the Beast is the newest musical on schedule for the drama club. Miss Jenn (Kate Reinders) wants to enter her students into an elite musical theater competition…until she realizes she’s about to go up against her ex, who’s conveniently the new adviser for a rivaling theater club. Not to mention our dear Nini (Olivia) just got accepted to her dream drama program, leaving behind all she knows—including Ricky, who she just got back together with.

TL:DR: There’s a lot of drama to unpack, and now that we’re done bingeing the entire season, we want more. So is a third season already in the works? Here’s what we know so far and whether this is the start of something new (you’re welcome for the pun).

First things first. Has Disney+ confirmed there will be a season 3?

YES. Disney+ just confirmed we will be getting a season 3. This makes total sense, given how many people are deeply in love with the show (or maybe it’s the ongoing drama between Olivia and Joshua…), so it won’t be long before the Disney+ school bell rings for an all-new season.

Well then, who’s expected to come back?

In a special announcement, Disney+ confirmed that production has officially started on January 18, 2022, and Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Kate Reinders, Olivia Rose Keegan, and Olivia Rodrigo are all back to work on season 3.

Adrian Lyles and Saylor Bell are also joining the cast as series regulars. Adrian will be playing Jet, Camp Shallow Lake’s mysterious new kid, while Saylor plays Maddox, a bright-eyed, quick-witted techie who always follows the rules.

There is one thing we know for certain though: Don’t expect any drama to get in the way of the HSM:TM:TS cast making the TV show. In fact, creator/executive producer Tim Federle actually confirmed this in an interview with Decider, saying how after all the drama with “Drivers License,” it didn’t affect Olivia and Josh being professionals on-set.

“I did not feel the material impact anything other than everybody, including Josh, being exceptionally excited for Olivia with this crazy rocket ride,” he told the publication. Well, thank goodness for that—we need more Nini and Ricky in our lives, STAT.

Are there going to be any special cameos this season?

Along with the big news about the cast, Disney also revealed that some familiar faces will be joining the cast for the first time.

Corbin Bleu, aka Chad in the original High School Musical series, will be guest-starring as himself in the new season. Hannah Montana’s Jason Earles will also guest-star as Dewy Wood, the stone-faced killjoy of a camp director at Camp Shallow Lake, where the kids will be set to perform over the summer.

Zombies star Meg Donnelly is also joining in on the fun as Val, a confident and funny college student and longtime camper turned counselor-in-training who is ready to choreograph the summer production of Frozen.

Jojo Siwa will play Madison, a Camp Shallow Lake alum who seems to come back and show off her skills.

Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson is playing Marvin, an old family friend of Nini who seems to help her when she has to figure out something big.

Do we know what we can expect from season 3?

Again, this is up for the writers of the show to determine. But we do know the show is not going to be following its film predecessor anymore and instead will go off on its own tangent. And the kids aren’t going to be hanging out at the school this year. They’re going to—wait for it—summer camp.

“The characters are going on this journey of self-discovery, figuring out the things that make them happy and what they love and what their passions are,” HSM:TM:TS star Larry Saperstein told Decider about the Wildcats’ new journey. “They bring out the best in each other and see the best in each other, which is really important for where they’re at in their lives.”

While they’ll be performing music from Frozen, season 3 will also feature music from Camp Rock and, of course, the High School Musical franchise.

There can’t be another season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series without the kids putting on a new show, and it looks like Disney+ dropped a major hint as to what to expect. During Disney+ Day, the tagline “Love is an open door” was revealed for season 3, and if you’re a Disney fan, then you already know it’s a line from Frozen!

Oh, and let’s not forget the relationships budding throughout season 2. Olivia teased to People some potential romance drama going down between certain characters, so maybe the third season will pick up with the aftermath of that? We can’t necessarily confirm if the drama is good or bad, but there’s sure to be more to come.
