Nathan Lane Will Reportedly Not Return to "Only Murders in the Building" Season 3

In July 2022, Deadline reported that the series starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez has been renewed for a third season.

The show’s official account also shared the exciting news on its social media pages. Alongside a video of a group text between Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, the post reads, “My neighbors have a special message for you all: #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding will return for Season 3! Now I just have to worry about who’s next... I hope it’s not me!”

Season 2 ended with a cliffhanger, hinting at whose death Charles, Oliver, and Mabel may be investigating next, but further details have not been confirmed. But fear not. Attn OMITB fans: you won’t have to wait much longer to find out what happens to our favorite mystery-solving crew. Steve Martin and Martin Short recently began touring their show “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” and the actors casually dropped the exact date that Season 3 will be hitting Hulu.

“Catch the new season August 8,” Steve said. “Our show is like Steve trying to pee — it streams for 33 minutes,” quipped Martin.

So, season 3 of Only Murders in the Building has finished filming?

Yes! Our sleuths have wrapped sleuthing over at The Arconia, which means we’re one step closer to season 3’s premiere. Selena made the announcement on Instagram on April 20, alongside the *cutest* picture (and caption!) of herself and season 3 guest star Meryl Streep. 🥹

Throughout filming, the cast was spotted out and about on the streets of Manhattan. On January 18, Selena was seen on set, dressed in a chic pinstripe jacket, suit, and pumps, per photos obtained by Daily Mail UK. The star accessorized the sophisticated look with a stylish puffer bag. Her co-stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short, were also spotted on set in character, with Charles’s signature fedora in tow.

Who is in the Only Murders in the Building season 3 cast?

According to an announcement made on the OMITB social media accounts, “all of our favorite characters” will return in the third season. So the crime-solving trio, a.k.a Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, will grace our screens once again.

However, a July 2023 report by Deadline revealed that Emmy-winner Nathan Lane, who plays Teddy Dimas, is not set to return to the role for season 3. The actor said that he could not shoot the third season due to a scheduling conflict with a "prior commitment" on Broadway, where he was playing the character Irving in Pictures From Home.

"I get old but [being nominated for an Emmy for Only Murders] never gets old. I feel very grateful and lucky just to be alive and that I'll be invited to the big party," he told Deadline.

On January 17, 2023, Selena announced a major (!) new addition. In a TikTok with the OMITB gang, the actress panned to castmates Steve Martin, Martin Short, Paul Rudd, and Andrea Martin — before landing on Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep (!!) and... OMG. “Can this honestly get any better?,” Selena asks. “Well, I do think it can get a little bit better,” Paul adds as Meryl appears behind Steve, Martin, and Selena. Iconic. Meanwhile, Paul reprises his role as Broadway star Ben Glenroy after making a cameo in the season 2 finale, “I Know Who Did It,” per Variety. At the premiere of his movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Paul dished about working with Sel and the rest of the OMITB cast: “It's the most amazing thing to be [part of], and to be in that room,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “Selena [Gomez] is great and I've worked with Selena, she's a really good friend of mine. I adore her. Martin Short and Steve Martin are Mount Rushmore.”

“Andrea Martin was in that room and for any comedy fan, I mean she's like a home run hitter. I can't believe I'm in the room with Andrea Martin,” Paul dished, “and then you pan over and it's Meryl Streep! So yeah, she's a bit of a powerhouse.”

But wait — there’s *another* famous face making its way into The Arconia. Tony Award-winning actor Jesse Williams joins the cast of Only Murders, according to Deadline. The former Grey’s Anatomy star will “play a documentarian with a particular interest in the case” that Mabel, Charles, and Oliver are working on.

Finally, in February 2023, Deadline broke the news that the stacked OMITB cast would be adding another big name to the list, thanks to the addition of Emily in Paris star Ashley Park. Ashley will be joining the season 3 line-up to play a recurring role as Kimber, a Broadway ingenue, and in conversation with Entertainment Tonight on June 26, the actress shared a small glimpse into her character and the upcoming season.

“I don’t think I’m allowed to say yet, but what I will say, if people know my roots of where I came from, they’ll be happy in terms of how I started in this business,” she began. “I think what you can expect from season 3, is it’s like, that cast with legends, and just the most gracious people. I laughed so much on that set as well.” Legends indeed, and we need August 8 to get here ASAP.

Has the cast shared any behind-the-scenes footage?

On July 11, Selena Gomez posted a sweet and silly video with screen legend and co-star, Meryl Streep, to promote the upcoming season of Only Murders in the Building. In the clip, the actresses posed next to each other in blue and gold sequined maxi dresses, respectively. "Hey everyone! Get ready for season 3 of Only Murders in the Building..." Selena started before pointing to Meryl to cue the next line. "Dropping August... 8th? I think that's right," Meryl said, sharing a laugh with Sel.

Sel also took to Instagram to showcase her "favorite people" a little over a month before Only Murders in the Building season 3 premieres on August 8. In the wee hours of the morning on June 28, Sel posted a pic of her beside her fellow sleuths Steve Martin and Martin Short and captioned it, "Some of my favorite people.. This isn't the only time the cast has shared BTS footage. Recurring guest star Wesley Taylor took to Instagram with an iconic BTS clip performing a dance routine with Meryl Streep. What will Only Murders in the Building season 3 be about?

The sophomore season of OMITB revolved around the killing of Arconia building manager Bunny Folger, and although we know now who her murderer was, the final scenes of the show spell out a whole new murder mystery for season 3.

Much like the setup for season 2’s storyline, the introduction to season 3’s plot occurs in the final minute of the finale episode. Paul Rudd’s character, Ben, collapses on stage, bleeding from his mouth, and is presumed dead. But it’s revealed that just minutes before the curtains lifted, he and Charles were in a tense exchange, where Charles declared, “Stay away from her” and “I know what you did.” Who is Charles referring to? What does he know? All of these questions remain as we wait for the next chapter to unfold.

Are there any teasers or trailers for Only Murders in the Building season 3?

Yes! On March 21, Only Murders dropped a teaser pic on Instagram and we are 🤯. In the photo, Selena stuns in a lace, strapless wedding gown, while Martin poses by her side in a velvet tux. “Father of the Bride Part II?,” the caption reads. (ICYMI, Martin and Steve star in the 1991 rom-com classic and its 1995 sequel 🥹.) What does this mean?! We need this season to drop ASAP.

But that’s not all! A teaser trailer for the upcoming season premiered during the 95th Academy Awards on March 12. In it, we see Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep with our fave trio. Selena dropped a cryptic post on Instagram that had fans speculating (and freaking out) in the comments. The first photo featured Selena's blonde hair as she faced away from the camera, and the second photo showed a manicured hand pointing to a message on a pair of sweatpants that read "Thank You For Asking About My Mental Health." Selena simply captioned the photo "3," to which the official OMITB account responded, "3️⃣!!!"

"3 MINUTES TIL YOU ANNOUNCE THE ALBUM???" freaked out one fan, while another wrote, "3 WHAT?!"
