The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Sequel Is Happening: Here’s Everything We Know

Peter Kavinsky lovers, rejoice: Netflix confirmed it's making a sequel to To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before with a very adorable Instagram that features both Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo). This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. To All the Boys is based on a novel trilogy by Jenny Han, after all, and the success of the first movie almost guaranteed a second one would happen.

But here’s the question: What will happen in this second film? The first movie took a few creative liberties and tied everything up in a neat bow, presumably in case a second one wasn’t in the cards. By the end of the movie, Lara Jean and Peter are happily together. That doesn’t happen in the books, though. Instead, Lara writes Peter a letter that’s delivered in the second novel, P.S.: I Still Love You. It’s after this that Lara and Peter share a steamy hot tub kiss that goes viral—but as you know, this all happened in the first movie. So where will things pick up for chapter two?

“Jenny constructed a book trilogy starting with Lara Jean alone in her room, reading romance novels and fantasizing about what it means to be in love, to getting that, and now [in the sequel], dealing with it,” director Michael Fimognari recently told Entertainment Weekly. “And we still have the little drop in the pond that was created in the first movie, which is these love letters that got sent out, and the ripple of that gets to come back.”

Netflix dropped the first full-length trailer, complete with many romantic Peter and Lara Jean moments, Lauv's "I Like Me Better," and the very first moment that John Ambrose McLaren walks back into Lara Jean's life and, well, complicates matters.

On January 22, Netflix released a second trailer in which we get to see a bit more of (the quite charming) John Ambrose McLaren, jealousy flaring up in Lara Jean and Peter's relationship (from both sides!), and Lara Jean trying to work out how she's feeling about both the boys now in her life. "I thought I wanted happily ever after," she says in a voice-over. "But we're still at the beginning."

We also got a few new images from the much anticipated sequel.

Here’s what else we know about the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel so far.

The title and release date: It’s officially P.S.: I Still Love You, according to a tweet from Netflix. And it will be released on February 12, 2020. The third film, titled To All the Boys: Always and Forever Lara Jean, is also in production.

The director: Michael Fimognari will take over directing duties from Susan Johnson, who helmed the first one.

The cast: In the film’s Instagram announcement, Condor and Centineo both confirm they’ll be in the sequel. Centineo told Variety that “every single person involved in the making of [the first] film wants a sequel.” So I’d expect to see some more familiar faces. Jordan Fisher has been cast as John Ambrose McClaren, a childhood friend and new love interest for Lara Jean. Jordan Burtchett originally had the role in the first film (he appeared toward the end). According to producer Matt Kaplan, John Ambrose is going to shake things up for Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky’s new romance.

Netflix also announced that Ross Butler, who played Reggie during the first season of Riverdale and Zach in 13 Reasons Why, will star as Peter’s best friend. “🚨ALERT: very exciting TATB news🚨 Ross Butler is going to play Peter K.’s bff, Trevor Pike, in @toalltheboysnetflix!” the Instagram announcement read.

Han announced on Twitter that actor Holland Taylor will be joining the cast as John Ambrose McClaren’s grandmother Stormy, saying, “We are so blessed.”

“And for Trina we have the lovely and hilarious @sarayublue and my dearest @MadeleineArthur is back as Chris!” Han added. Trina is a neighbor of the Covey family who becomes close with Lara Jean’s dad.

The plot: Johnson told Entertainment Tonight that a sequel would likely follow what happens in the novel version of P.S. I Still Love You (minus those creative liberties, of course). At the BAFTA Tea Party during awards season, star Lara Condor backed this up, telling us, “We’re going to try and stay very close to the book. There will be a new love interest to challenge Peter, so that will be interesting to see how that plays out.”

On December 12, Entertainment Weekly released the first images from the set, including shots of Lara Jean with both of her suitors.

“They’re true friends,” Condor said about Lara Jean and John Ambrose. “But because you can love your friend very much, you get confused. You’re like, ‘Do I love him or do I love him as a friend?’ So he’s really there to mix it up.”

And the rivalry between Peter and John Ambrose is very intentional. “We certainly want there to be a Team Peter and a Team John,” director Fimognari told EW.

Get excited, people!
