While we all look back at the ’90s with fond memories, the citizens of Skylin, Texas view it through a different lens. Welcome to Cruel Summer, the latest Freeform hit that follows the mysterious disappearance of the most popular girl in town and the least popular girl’s rise to the top of the social pyramid. But not everything is as it seems and there are darker secrets hidden in the town where status means everything. Just like many other Freeform shows, you’ll be hooked from the get-go and waiting for Cruel Summer to come back for another season.
Lucky for us, season 2 is currently underway — but we won’t be seeing our fave characters like Jeanette, Kate, Mallory, Vince, and Jamie. The anthology series will take place in a different setting for its sophomore season, and introduce an entirely new cast. Where will the next mystery take place? Who is in the Cruel Summer season 2 cast?
In April 2022, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Cruel Summer is now officially an anthology series, which means we’ll follow a whole new set of characters and unravel a different mystery. So, while we won’t know how Jeanette and Kate move on from the eventful season 1 finale, we’ll get to see a new story unfold with different people. This news was a plot twist we didn’t expect, but at least we won’t have to say goodbye to Cruel Summer just yet!
The new cast for Cruel Summer season 2 includes Sadie Stanley, Griffin Gluck, KaDee Strickland, Lisa Yamada, and Sean Blakemore. On April 27, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Lexi Underwood has been tapped to replace Eloise Payet in the role of Isabella.
The Hollywood Reporter also revealed the season 2 characters and their storylines. Sadie Stanley plays Megan Landry, a computer coder and honor student from a blue-collar family. Upon meeting Isabella, she starts to “embrace her true self.” Lexi Underwood portrays the “alluring and enigmatic” Isabella, the daughter of diplomats who spends a year with the Landry family as an exchange student. Griffin Gluck takes on the role of Megan’s lifelong best friend, Luke Chambers, who hails from a prominent family.
KaDee Strickland has been cast as Debbie, Megan’s hard-working single mom, while Lisa Yamada portrays Parker, a popular musician who becomes more cynical as the world takes a dark turn around her. Sean Blakemore will play the sheriff of the small Pacific Northwest town where the second season takes place.
What will Cruel Summer season 2 be about?
Season 1 was set in the ’90s and followed Jeanette and her friends, Vince and Mallory, as they discovered that Kate, the popular girl at their school in Skylin, Texas, went missing. So what will season 2 be about? According to Deadline, we’re going back to the early aughts for another mystery. The official synopsis of the new season is as follows:
Set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest, the second chapter follows the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship. Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella, and Megan’s best friend Luke, the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward.
Is there a trailer for Cruel Summer season 2?
Yes! About a month before the premiere, Freeform dropped the official trailer for Cruel Summer season 2. In the two-minute clip, we’re introduced to the idyllic Pacific Northwest town of Chatham and best friends Megan, Isabella, and Luke. But friendships soon fracture and fall apart when a body is pulled out of a local lake.
Are there photos from season 2?
Yes! On January 11, the network revealed the first look at Cruel Summer season 2. The photo, set against a backdrop of a moody Pacific Northwest landscape, features the main ensemble cast, including Lexi Underwood as Isabella, Sadie Stanley as Megan, Griffin Gluck as Luke, KaDee Strickland as Debbie, Lisa Yamada as Parker, and Sean Blakemore as the sheriff.
When will Cruel Summer season 2 premiere?
It’s official: The second season of Cruel Summer will debut on Freeform on June 5, 2023. But you can also check the series out over on Hulu, where it begins streaming on June 6.
