Ready to do something great for your mind and body? Now’s the perfect time to register for our free 5K on October 1, 2022. The walking is real—it’s the community that’s virtual. This twice-yearly event is so popular that people from every single state join in! When you join, you become part of a community of thousands of walkers.

You’re probably familiar with local runs and walks held at a specific location. You’ve got to find good parking to get there on time, and it can be a drag to leave the stroller or dog at home. With a virtual walk, you pick where you do it, who you do it with, and what time you start. Done the walk before? Our next big event features new benefits and prizes! So, what are you waiting for?! Here’s everything you need to know to join in!

Meet Feeding America, our fall 2022 partner!

To help make health and wellness accessible for all, we’re proud to be partnering with Feeding America for the Fall 2022 Virtual Walk. Feeding America operates on the idea that “food shouldn’t be an impossible choice,” while working to create meaningful change in the fight against hunger nationwide. Every $1 donated helps provide at least 10 meals to those facing hunger. It only takes a little to make a big difference. Together, our Virtual Walk community can help end hunger together.

So the walk is actually free?

Of course! Signing up, participating, and sharing your progress online is completely free for everyone.

What if I can’t do it on October 1?

That’s perfectly okay! One of the exciting things about a virtual event is the flexibility. Sign up, do your 5K when you can, and wear your T-shirt proudly. We’ll be sharing photos on our social media that day, and hope you will too—but we’ll be excited to hear about your walk whenever you do it.

Can I walk with a group?

Yes! When you sign up, you’ll have the option to join or create a team, which works great for friends, coworkers, or other groups who want to sign up and walk together. You can also join teams after you’ve registered. (By the way, wearing our Virtual Walk shirts is a fantastic way to look more like a team.)

Being on a team also benefits you for this year’s “Why I Walk” contest—more on that below! But if you want to walk with people without creating a team, don’t sweat it; it’s a completely optional feature.

And if you’re looking to connect with other walkers from around the world, we also created a Facebook community just for those who register for the event. Here, walkers discuss training tips, share photos, and offer support to other walkers—the perfect community for newbies and pros alike. (It’s a great place to find team members, too!)

Is there any Virtual Walk swag?

Of course—what’s a 5K without some goodies? Each Pro Package costs $35 and includes a T-shirt, bib number, and sign. Each Limited-Edition Box costs $60 and includes those items, plus the Prevention 2023 planner, a special 74-page edition of Prevention called Walk Your Way Fit, and a downloadable stretching guide.

And if you share your “Why I Walk” story with us, you can enter for a chance to win a $75 Nathan Sports gift card, to help reach your fitness goals! We want to know what inspires you and your team to get out there, so share your story here!

How do you know I really did a 5K?

Because we trust you! By signing up, you’re committing to your wellbeing in a way that works for you, so if 2 miles makes more sense for you, no prob!

But, we’ll be following along with everyone who posts on social media, so be sure to share your experience and use #virtualwalk and #WhyIWalk. We’ll also be sending certificates of completion to everyone who signs up, which are perfect for printing out.

You also don’t need to report your final time or distance to us! This event is meant to inspire us all to exercise a little more, not stress you out with logistics. Be proud of yourself without feeling the need to send any info to us!

How can I prepare for the Virtual Walk?

We’ll be sending an exclusive weekly newsletter—filled with walking tips, advice, and reminders—to everyone who registers. It’s available only to people who register for the Virtual Walk, so make sure you sign up.

Why should I walk?

It’s incredibly good for you: Walking can reduce your risk of chronic disease, improve your mood, and add years to your life. But walking is powerful for other reasons too. It can give you time to catch up with a friend or see your neighborhood with fresh eyes. There’s lots more advice on our Virtual Walk page, too.
