Everything’s Coming Up Pete Davidson in 2020

After a truly fascinating career arc, launched in the 2010s, Pete Davidson is starting off the new decade strong: Netflix announced today that the Saturday Night Live star is getting his own stand-up special, Pete Davidson: Alive From New York, later this month, and he’s also got a hotly anticipated Judd Apatow movie on the horizon. Plus, how can we forget Chad, Davidson's deservedly breakout SNL character, who's had some semi-viral moments in the past couple of months?

Alive From New York was filmed, as you might imagine, in New York City at the Gramercy Theatre. The nearly hour-long set is the 26-year-old’s first Netflix original comedy special, although not his first televised special (Pete Davidson: SMD came out back in 2016). The trailer for the upcoming Netflix special teases one bit in particular in which Davidson talks about his only issue with some of his gay friends (honestly, it's worth watching to get at exactly what we mean here—words...don't do it justice). Alive From New York hits Netflix on February 25.

A couple of weeks after that, on March 13, Apatow’s The King of Staten Island will premiere at South by Southwest, a few months before it opens wide on June 19. The movie, Apatow’s first since 2015’s Trainwreck with Amy Schumer, is deeply personal for the comedian, as it tells the story of his own life and how he dealt with the loss of his father, a firefighter who died during the 9/11 attacks, when Davidson was just 7 years old. Bill Burr and Marisa Tomei are among the movie's other cast members.

All of this big-ticket Hollywood momentum is happening while Davidson continues his gig as one of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players on SNL. He’s been in two shorts that have gone somewhat viral this season, both times playing his dimwitted, unintentional heartbreaker character “Chad.” In December, he captivated Jennifer Lopez, and just last weekend, Drag Race legend RuPaul declared Chad “the future of drag.”

While waiting for Alive From New York to start streaming, why not revisit GQ’s 2018 feature on Davidson to see what a difference a few years make?

He’s one of SNL’s youngest cast members ever—and his DGAF comedy has turned him into a star we can’t look away from.
