While the 2023 Met Gala has already been flooded with controversy, from the ticket price to the theme of the night, many are still expecting a bunch of their fav A-listers to attend in style — including Oscar-nominated songstress Rihanna.
Not only has Rihanna arrived in style at every Met Gala she steps foot at, but everyone associates her (and quite a few other A-listers) with that iconic Met scene from Ocean’s 8. Along with that, people were so desperate for her to arrive at the 2022 Met Gala, that in lieu of her attendance, the Metropolitan Museum of Art created a marble statue of her iconic Vogue shoot where she showed off her baby bump, per ABC.
In a previous interview per Harper’s Bazaar, when asked about her style, Rihanna said, “The way I dress depends on how I feel. I never have to psych myself up. Usually it just feels like it works.” Forever a confident Queen!
From edgy A-line dresses to elaborate, pearl-encrusted ensembles, Rihanna always understands the assignment.
In honor of the 2023 Met Gala tonight, let’s take a look back at every single time Rihanna made our jaws drop with her edgy, mesmerizing red carpet fashion.

2007: “Poiret: King OfFashion”
For Rihanna’s Met Gala debut, she perfectly embodied the loose and free-spirited vibes the dress code wanted for the theme of “Poiret: King Of Fashion.” So for the 2007 event, she donned a flowing white Georges Chakra, which he paired with black lace gloves, sparkling silver jewels, and her iconic asymmetrical bob.

2009: “Model as Muse: EmbodyingFashion”
For the 2009 Met Gala theme of “Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” Rihanna rocked one of her most iconic Met Gala looks to date: a ruffle-sleeved, black Dolce & Gabbana suit.

2011: “Alexander McQueen: SavageBeauty”
How is this black lace Stella McCartney look not talked about more?! Back in 2011 for the theme of “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” Rihanna wowed in this sheer naked dress, along with Christian Louboutin sandals, emerald Wilfredo Rosado earrings, and a fire red fishnet braid.

2014: “Charles James: BeyondFashion”
Rihanna switched up her usually dark Met Gala looks by taking inspiration from her Met Gala debut dress for 2014’s “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” theme. For the theme, many were expected to arrive in something that was inspired by James’ architecturally mesmerizing looks, and since cutouts were a rarity in 2014, Rihanna hit the top of the best-dressed lists with this white Stella McCartney ensemble.

2018: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination”
While it seems like every look from the 2018 Met Gala was one of the best looks the Met Gala has ever seen, Rihanna’s Maison Margiela definitely stole the show. To honor the unique theme, she wowed in a Pope-inspired look of a pearl and jewel-encrusted, matching miter, and cloak.

2021: “In America: A Lexicon OfFashion”
For her 2021 Met Gala look for “In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion” (where she and A$AP Rocky made their red carpet debut!), she arrived in an oversized black Balenciaga coat dress, matching beanie, and jewelry from Bulgari, Thelma West, and Maria Tash.
She told Essence, “I wanted a look that seemed very powerful yet feminine, yet a black hoodie which is the thing that we’re usually incriminated by as black people. I wanted to empower that. I wanted to take that and make it mine and make it fashion.”
