Even in Self-Isolation, Grimes Pulls Off a Stage-Worthy Look

In a moment when many are working from home, the concept of accessorizing often feels like an afterthought. While putting on some simple jewelry can be a grounding ritual to start off your day, these days wearing over-the-top bijoux requires obsessive levels of fashion commitment—especially when nobody is going to see it. Face jewelry, in particular, is hard to pull off. But if anyone’s going to do it (during self-isolation, no less), it’s Grimes.

The Canadian pop star is no stranger to odd accessories. She’s often wielding swords in her videos or posting cyberpunk portraits of herself embracing a crossbow in combat boots. Even when she’s making red carpet appearances, she’ll enhance her usually elfin looks with unusual pieces of jewelry—just take the Tesla-referencing choker that she wore with her date Elon Musk to the 2018 Met Gala.

Grimes’s latest jewelry look is her most dramatic yet. Yesterday, in an Instagram post, she showed off a headband by South Korean designer Hyein Seo decorated with cascading chains of beads that framed her face (she even pulled some into her mouth, call it floss jewelry?). She accompanied the series of selfies with a message of self-acceptance regarding her features, something that she says it took her a long time to feel comfortable with. “[People] make fun of my big nose and weird face but I think it’s cool to be strange,” Grimes wrote in her caption. Figuring out what makeup techniques worked for her face was also a process, as the traditional ones didn’t really do the trick. “I’m grateful to be oddly designed,” she continued. There’s a subtle power in adorning a face that’s “oddly designed,” with an accessory that’s equally strange—it’s doubling down on weirdness in the most stylish way possible.
