Like most, we’re forever fans of the Irwin family—especially now that there’s an official new member.

While we’ve known about Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell’s marriage on Wednesday, March 25, it wasn’t until the latest episode of Crikey! It's the Irwins that fans actually got a firsthand look into the couple’s big day.

On Saturday, April 18, the show aired its Bindi’s Wedding special—a 50-minute behind-the-scenes peek at what led up to Bindi’s big day, as well as the wedding day itself.

In the episode, Bindi explained that before her father Steve passed away in 2006, his life goal was to create the Africa Savannah at the Australia Zoo. Because of the sentiment, Bindi planned to marry Chandler in that exact spot to honor her dad.

Chandler, When I went to write my vows I found I couldn’t stop writing them. I started by sharing all the ways you make my life beautiful and wrote close to a thousand words. Then I moved on to write about what an extraordinary person you are and I needed a new pen. Finally I wanted to share all my hopes for the future and I ran out of notebook paper. I thought about how there is no way to describe genuine, unconditional love. A love like this is meant to be felt, in every part of our soul. Marriage marks an incredible beginning and yet I feel like we’ve already experienced so much life together. We say all the time that it feels like we’ve been married for years. We’ve been a team through life’s wonderful highs and difficult lows. You’ve held my hand as we’ve run towards every new adventure. My dad used to say that I couldn’t marry anyone unless he could swim across the croc pond first. And now, here you are, helping us during our regular crocodile demonstrations. One of your jobs is to jump into the water with our biggest crocs to help encourage them home! They say there’s a moment when you know you’ve fallen in love with someone, for me it was watching you happily jump in the water with a 15 foot crocodile and then tell me how much you enjoyed it. You are my soulmate. I promise to love you with all my heart through every twist and turn the world brings our way. I promise to encourage your dreams and help you achieve them. I promise to stand beside you as your wife, teammate and friend. I promise to share an ‘I love you’ before I sleep each night no matter what our day has brought. I promise to be your strength and light when you need a it. I promise to revel with you in each breathtaking moment we are given in this life. Chandler, Thank you for loving me for me. You love me when I’m uncontrollably laughing or falling asleep by ‪6pm‬. You validate what unconditional love really means. You’ve been my best friend for over six years. You’ve made me smile every day since I first met you. That’s amazing and so are you. My husband, my teammate and partner in conservation. To quote our favourite show, “I love you and I like you”.

"So what's really special is that we're getting married in the place that was his biggest dream," she said. "His goal was to open up this extraordinary area with African animals all roaming together, and our ceremony will take place with that right behind us."

However, given the current state of the world, the wedding, unfortunately, didn’t go off without a hitch. But that didn’t stop 21-year-old Bindi and 23-year-old Chandler from celebrating to the fullest.

“Bindi and Chandler are just those people that roll with absolutely anything,” Bindi’s 16-year-old brother Robert—who walked her down the aisle—said on The Today Show Australia. “Of course, for them, they wanted everyone to be safe and to follow all the rules… You know, it was a very small wedding, but they just rolled with it. They made it beautiful. Our zoo team really stepped up. And it was such a gorgeous day. And I think for me and Mum, we were so emotional and so happy. It was a day that you definitely wish that Dad was there for it, but I think he was definitely there with us in spirit. And Bindi and Chandler, they’re perfect for each other.”

As far as rolling with anything, the couple not only had to change their wedding plans due to the pandemic—limiting the number of people who could attend—they also had to transition their private ceremony from outside with the animals to indoors, thanks to a helicopter of paparazzi suddenly swooping in.

"I've wanted to get married since I was a little girl. I've always dreamed of this amazing day," Bindi said in the episode. And despite the challenging situation—world crisis, change of date, and the paparazzi—she couldn’t have been more excited to tie the knot.

"I wish so much that dad and Chandler could have met, but in a way, I feel like dad is still with us," Bindi said in the show. "I had the closest relationship with my dad. He was always my best friend and we did everything together… And I think that his spirit lives on in everything that we do. And I think he'd be really excited."
