Shadow of the Colossus was a monumental game that left its mark on the industry in various ways, with many titles taking inspiration from its mechanics. However, few games have captured the feeling of fighting and climbing giant titans. Newly formed Canadian developer Yellow Brick Games’ Eternal Strands aims to do just that, albeit set in a more colorful world.

The game has been in development by a team of 68 people over four years, with a debut trailer now available courtesy of IGN. The game’s music will be composed by Austin Wintory, whose previous works include Flow, Journey, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Abzu, and other notable titles. Watch the trailer below.

The game sees players take on the role of Brynn, a young “Weaver” who must uncover the mysteries of the Enclave, a powerful nation populated by “Arks”, 25-meter-long beasts. Players will fight Arks by utilizing their environment with physics-based abilities, weather phenomena, and yes, by climbing up their bodies and stabbing them at weak spots. The game’s art style leans towards the cartoony, bearing a resemblance to games like Immortals: Fenyx Rising or Zelda games, which should mean it will hold up well over time.

Yellow Brick Games promises “revolutionary” systems for gameplay, which uses “heat spreads, cold chills, and real-time destruction.” Brynn will be able to use telekinesis to hurl objects at enemies, much like Jesse Faden in Remedy Entertainment’s Control. It’s not confirmed whether the game is fully open-world. Players will explore the capital city of Dynevron, with many paths that lead into each other which can be unlocked with new abilities while progressing through the game.

“Our hope with Eternal Strands is to deliver an adventure that brings a sense of fun and excitement to fantasy, while encouraging players to experiment with its systems,” said Mike Laidlaw, CCO at Yellow Brick Games. “It’s a very different game to ones I’ve worked on in the past, and it’s been a delight to generally answer the question ‘what if the player does X?’ with ‘Cool!’ It’s also exciting to have a chance to build an all-new world that encourages and reacts to this kind of play.”

Eternal Strands will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
