Erin Napier Says "It Cuts Deep" When People Ask if She's Going to Have More Children

From House Beautiful

Erin Napier is over people poking their noses where they shouldn't. The Home Town star opened up to People in its latest issue about a topic that needs to be treated delicately: a woman's reproductive situation.

Napier, who is the mother of 2-year-old daughter Helen, spoke on some of the "weird and unnecessary" comments people have said to her, such as "you need to give Helen a sibling," and "[Helen] doesn't need to be an only child." Ultimately, the HGTV star believes phrases like that need to stop being tossed around so lightly.

"I have a lot of dear people close to me who aren't able to have children and want to desperately," she said. "When things like that are said, it cuts deep." She explains that while reproductive issues are not necessarily a problem for her and husband Ben, she wants to be "a voice for the people that I love."

However, she does share that before getting pregnant with Helen, there were some doubts on whether she'd even be able to. Napier explains that she had a perforated appendix that had repeatedly ruptured and healed itself. Because of that, doctors told her that she might not be able to have biological children. Fortunately, she was able to prove them wrong in May 2017 when she and Ben learned they were expecting.

"I felt pressure from the clock more so than anything else," she continued, adding that she and husband Ben didn't start a family until their 30s -- which was considered old compared to their peers in south Mississippi. "But I want to change the narrative. It's a delicate conversation and people need to be more careful talking about it," she said.

In terms of their own family's future, the couple is happy with whatever comes their way. Ben told People that "we'd love to have more, but if we can't, we're perfectly happy with Helen," adding, "we're big fans of adoption too."
