Even though Marvel ripped out our minds and hearts, Indiana Jones-style, in Loki, What...If? is clearly a mindfuck of its own.

With Episode One premiering on Disney+ Wednesday morning, we got our first glimpse of what Marvel promised—an animated look at different branches of the multiverse of madness. The first episode showed a timeline where Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter took the supersoldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, busting up Nazis and winning the war as Captain Carter. At the end of What...If?'s premiere, we see Captain Carter take down the Big Bad multidimensional octopus monster, she dips through a time-space portal and shows up in another timeline. (Got all that?) When she reappears, Nick Fury and Hawkeye are waiting for her in the present day. We can assume that the events of The Avengers movies will follow, only with Captain Carter in Steve Rogers's shoes.

All right. Well, we have to ask: Does this mean we'll someday see Hayley Atwell show up as a live-action Captain Carter?

If we had to put money on it, probably. First of all, What If...?'s head writer, A.C. Bradley, confirmed that the series is officially MCU canon. Which means that what we see in the show exists alongside the past 13 years of Marvel flicks. So Captain Carter is, you know, somewhere out there. Second point: Fans are obsessed with Peggy supersoldiering herself into Captain Carter. Just check Twitter right now. And we know that Marvel listens to the people who fork out billions of dollars its way to watch these things. Last one: There are rumblings, even if they're just rumors or unnamed sources, that Hayley Atwell will show up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Captain Carter. If Multiverse of Madness truly is the multiverse-sweeping adventure Marvel is promising, then it would honestly feel off if Marvel ignored the characters it introduces What If...? entirely. Maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves! Can't blame us for getting excited. For what it's worth, What If...? director Bryan Andrews is all for it, too.

"I know A.C. and I feel totally the same in this, and while we don’t know if this is necessarily going to happen, it would be amazing if they would just do a Captain Carter movie," Andrews told The Hollywood Reporter. "Just get Hayley Atwell in the suit, give her her own franchise and just have her blow doors like hells to the yeah."
