‘Entitled’ girlfriend gets upset over boyfriend’s birthday gift: ‘Can’t normal couples just celebrate birthdays casually?’

A man is rethinking his relationship after his girlfriend had a negative response to a birthday gift.

He asked Reddit’s “Am I the A******? (AITA)” forum for advice. His girlfriend of two years explicitly told him she hated the birthday gift he got her. Now, he’s wondering if she is entitled.

The boyfriend got his girlfriend jewelry, electronics and other pricey items for past occasions. He also usually takes her to a “fancy restaurant.” This year for her birthday, he took her to a Japanese omakase restaurant and got her a less expensive gift.

“The gift was a cute animal desk stand thing holding up different motivational quotes which I thought she can put at work that would encourage her to be more productive (since she switched new jobs and I felt she needed a little motivational push).

“She told me straight to my face that she didn’t like the gift and was disappointed, and that she expected something nicer like jewelry or a handbag,” he explained.

He now wonders if the price of the item was the issue. The Reddit poster couldn’t help but feel that his girlfriend expects expensive presents, but he wishes she would focus more on their connection.

“My question is: is she being entitled? Or even ungrateful? If she doesn’t get want she wants, she throws a tantrum which I think is overreaction and unnecessary. To be honest, I crave for simple moments and being present with each other, rather than spending on materialistic things,” he said.

“I’m starting to feel like it’s pointless giving her these kinds of superficial things, however I’m ok with doing fancy dinners every now and then. I don’t know how to say it, but I just appreciate time spent together more than anything else… Can’t normal couples just celebrate birthdays casually without all the fancy stuff?”

Redditors shared their advice with the poster.

“Your gift was based on your assessment of her flaws and what she needed to do better,” a person wrote.

‘It sounds like you gave her something you think would be good for her, instead of something she would enjoy,” another said.

“You kind of set the expectations for the kind of gifts you usually get her. Without communicating, it can absolutely come off like you’re trying not to put in effort,” a Redditor said.
