This is the ending of Netflix's The Watcher explained
Netflix's latest spine-tingling thriller series The Watcher was only released yesterday (13th October) and yet it's already gone straight into the number one spot.
The seven-part series tells the story of Dean and Nora Brannock (played by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale) who buy their dream home for their family. When they move in however, they are sent a letter from someone called The Watcher. The Watcher says they have been tasked with guarding the house from its second coming. They soon learn their new idyllic neighbourhood is less than welcoming and receive a series of letters from The Watcher.
The Watcher is based on the true story of the Broaddus family, whose story went viral after it was told in a 2018 story by The Cut. In real life The Watcher sent three letters to the Broaddus family, telling them they were being watched and warned them against making changes to the house. The letters were sent in 2014 and now, eight years later, The Watcher has still not been identified.

The final episode of The Watcher attempts to solve the mystery of the identity of The Watcher.
When Dean goes to visit their private detective Theodora at the hospital she confesses to being The Watcher. She revealed she was the previous owner of the house and had sold it to Dean and Nora. She explained to Dean she had bought the house after her husband died. After five years of searching for her dream property she discovered the 657 Boulevard Westfield home.
Shortly after moving in, Theodora was diagnosed with cancer. Her doctors didn't believe there was a cure, so she found a doctor in Mexico who thought he could cure her cancer, but he was expensive and so she needed to sell the house in order to pay for her treatment.
Theodora tells Dean she then discovered her husband had hidden away over a $1million in royalties which meant she didn't need to sell the house in the first place. She said she then became obsessed with getting her house back from Dean and Nora and was the one who wrote the letters, and planned the stunts to spook the family.
After she dies, Dean goes to apologise to the neighbours for his behaviour as he's now discovered the identity of The Watcher. When telling Maureen it was Theodora, she reveals there was no neighbour who lived at the house called Theodora and it was a different couple.
Stunned, Dean and Nora go to Theodora's funeral where her daughter revealed her mother wanted to solve the case for them before she died and so she inserted herself into the story in order to give them all peace, leaving Dean and Nora with no clarity over The Watcher's identity.
Elsewhere in the episode it is revealed Karen is the one to buy the house off the Brannocks. On the night she moves in, the bathtub mysteriously begins overflowing, her dog is killed and a mysterious hooded figure walks around the house. Karen then finds a letter addressed to her in the dumb waiter from The Watcher. Terrified, she runs out of the house.
The episode ends with a new family moving into the house (Karen is presumably too scared to live there) and Dean reveals the family has moved a few blocks away from the original house. The Watcher remains unidentified.
