What happened in the final episode of The Diplomat?

Episode eight of The Diplomat opens with the UK Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) inviting Kate into his office. The pair discuss how during the previous night Kate was on the receiving end of the Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear)'s rant that he couldn't go ahead with his explosive plans to kill a load of Russians after being told "no" by the US Secretary of State Ganon (Miguel Sandoval). Instead he was told they could arrest one man - Lenkov.

Dennison revealed though the PM was initially against the idea, over night he changed his mind and is happy with Lenkov's arrest as justice for the aircraft being blown up. Dennison went onto reveal he and Ganon were heading to Paris to over see the arrest.

Back at her offices Heyford (Ato Essandoh) reveals Ganon now wants Kate to travel to Paris to help with the arrest.

Kate's husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) is visibly jealous Kate is heading off to Paris and so she invites him along. However, he chooses to remain in London and so she asks him to take her place and make a speech at Chatham House.

His speech goes well, and whilst this is all happening Kate and Dennison are in Paris asking the French minister Fournier for her support for Lenkov’s arrest, which she denies.

After Hal delivers his speech he is met with Tory MP Merritt Grove who asks him to go a drink. Kate isn't best pleased when she hears this and believes Hal is trying to become Secretary of State.

Kate calls Maggie Roylin (Celia Imrie) who reveals Grove is a "compassionless conservative" who treats everything like it's "urgent". Kate then reveals to Dennison her marriage is ending, again.

Hal ignores Kate's wishes and heads to the meeting with Grove, whilst Kate wears that incredible red dress to the gala at The Louvre.

At the gala Kate asks Fournier to talk. Fournier reveals that London had asked to take the lead on the arrest on Lenkov, which is unusual as given it's on French soil, the arrest would usually be done by the French.

It's then that Fournier drops a rather large bombshell - the UK don't plan to arrest Lenkov, they intend to assassinate him, leaving Kate stunned.

Kate and Dennison rush out of the gala after Kate whips off her heels and when they arrive on a bridge, Kate demands to know if Dennison has been playing her the whole time. He reveals he had no clue about the planned assassination .

Dennison argues killing Lenkov would look bad for Trowbridge and the UK government, and the only person who would want Lenkov dead is the people who hired him.

It's here that the penny drops and the pair realise Trowbridge was behind the initial attack on the British aircraft carrier.

At the same time Hal is on his way to meet Gove, but what he doesn't know is that Heyford and Ronnie have gone to his meeting on his behalf after Kate didn't want Hal meeting with Grove.

Grove is annoyed by this and so walks out of the restaurant. As Ronnie and Heyford chase after Grove, Hal approaches them all from the other side. Grove reaches out to open his car door which instantly explodes.

Back in Paris, security surrounds Kate and Dennison. Kate is told something that causes her to cry and the episode ends there.

Talk about a cliffhanger. Why did Grove want to meet with Hal? Did Grove, Ronnie, Heyford and Hal survive the explosion? Did the British assassinate Lenkov? And what will happen to the Prime Minister if his crimes are discovered? These are some serious questions we need answers to asap.

Netflix, if you're listening, we need a season two.
