Emmys 2019: Fleabag ’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge Wins Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator and star of Fleabag, won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the Emmys. She beat out Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) for the prize. Fleabag also took home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series at tonight’s ceremony.

Fleabag was up for multiple awards this evening. Earlier in the night, Waller-Bridge won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Harry Bradbeer won Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series for his work on the program. The television adaptation, which appears stateside on Amazon Prime, is based on Waller-Bridge’s 2013 one-woman show of the same name. Waller-Bridge will appear on Saturday Night Live October 5, alongside musical guest Taylor Swift.
