Sex Education star Emma Mackey has suggested she won't be staring in the hit Netflix show for much longer. In a recent interview the 25-year-old spoke about the "bittersweet nature" of moving on from the show, in which she has starred as Maeve Wiley since 2019.

The third series of Netflix's Sex Education has only just landed on the streamer and already we're heartbroken, after show star Emma Mackey hinted that she may not be on the series for much longer, telling Hunger "I can't be 17 my whole life." We're devastated, but if there's anything Sex Education has taught us over the years, it's understanding.

"Sex Education is so momentous as a concept, as a show, and the cast are phenomenal," she said in her cover interview for the publication. "I genuinely care about them all a lot and I made lifelong friends. But the bittersweet nature of it is that I also can't be 17 my whole life."

Emma added that she may look to move into filmmaking at some point, "I'm very attracted and seduced by the idea of writing a film and conceiving something, being there at the conception of a story, working at it, seeing it through and then choosing a team."

Fans have been desperate to see where the story would go in the third instalment after the second season ended on a huge cliffhanger; in which Isaac deleted the voicemail from Otis on Maeve's phone in which he declares his love for her.

Losing Emma Mackey from the series would obviously be a huge disappointment, but surely it means her's and Otis's love story would have to come to some kind of conclusion?! Silver lining, right there.
