'Emily in Paris' Is a Popular Mess. Will Netflix Give it a Season Two?

In the midst of a global pandemic and chaotic presidential election, any escape from reality is welcome. Though it's been blasted by critics, the French, and pizza store owners, and now the good people watching the Golden Globes, Netflix’s Emily in Paris remains a distraction from reality, picking up legions of escape-hungry fans in the wake of its release. The show, from the mind of Sex and the City creator Darren Star, follows the adventures of Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), a savvy and upbeat marketing executive from Chicago, who gets an exciting promotion and relocates to Paris. With the ten short episodes of season one culminating in a massive cliffhanger, fans are dying to know whether Netflix will pick up the series for a second season.
Has Netflix Renewed Emily in Paris?
Next season is officially underway. On November 11, the show was confirmed for a second season at Netflix after its immensely popular first outing. “In season 2, she's going to be more of a part of the fabric of the world she's living in. She'll be more of a resident of the city," Star told OprahMag.com. "She'll have her feet on the ground a little more. She's making a life there."
Throughout season one, we watched Emily adjust to a new country and culture, but the second season could focus less on the language barrier and more on developing deeper relationships with her friends, coworkers, and love interests. The final episode of the first season ended with questions on all fronts.
First and foremost: who will Emily choose to pursue a romantic relationship with? We saw her hot neighbor, Gabriel, nearly say goodbye to Paris before his dream restaurant received funding at the last minute, making a future for these two a possibility. However, a new romance would be complicated, given Emily’s friendship with Gabriel's very recent ex, Camille. We also saw Emily begin to pursue Mathieu, with him even offering to take her away to Saint-Tropez for a weekend. Of course, this relationship is also complicated, considering that Mathieu is a client of Emily’s marketing firm. If the show is picked up for another season, Gabriel and Mathieu may not be Emily's only love interests, considering how much drama the writers love to pack into each 30-minute episode.
As for Emily's first love, her career, what will happen with the team at Savoir? Emily almost parted ways with the company, while her demanding boss, Sylvie, clearly doesn’t like Emily running around her office. If there’s room for a friendship to blossom between these two polar opposites, it may take more than a second season to get there.
What Will Emily in Paris Season Two Be About?
Though none of these theories have been confirmed just yet, both Collins and Star have spoken about some of their ideas for the season(s) yet to come. Collins spoke to Vanity Fair about her vision of where Emily might go next.
“There were so many situations that we were like, ‘Okay, write that down. That’s going to happen in season two,’” Collins said. “Also, there were many experiences where we were like, ‘Does Emily go abroad? Do you think Emily takes the Eurostar and hops out and goes to Belgium or she goes to London?’ That would be so much fun.” Referring to a conversation she had with Emily in Paris creator Darren Star, Collins said, “I’m like, ‘Darren, there are so many opportunities to just travel internationally when you’re here.’"
Star told Glamour that he’s not opposed to exploring outside of Paris, although the location comes second to telling a good story.
“We haven’t thought specifically, but seeing more of France is definitely something I’d love to do more on the show,” Star said. “If we can get to Italy, I’d love that. It’s just about where the stories take us. As much as we get to see the wonderful sides of Paris and France, it has to ultimately be driven by telling a good story first. The scenery comes second.”
Star also told Glamour about a few ideas he’s toying with for the next season, like spending more time exploring the lives of Emily’s coworkers.
“We'll see more of Emily's work family, absolutely. Especially Sylvie, who I feel like is so mysterious,” Star said. "I want to understand her more and know more about her, without totally knowing, if that makes sense.”
Star also opened up to E!, saying,
"I think Emily has some surprising tough choices. The show's so much about the culture undermining her expectations of how things are and how things seem. And everything will not be as it seems. It's always about challenging her American worldview. We certainly have a lot of forks in the road and a lot of places to go."
With Mindy moving in with Emily in the season finale, it’s safe to assume that she’ll be a bigger part of the next season. We can hopefully look forward to more character development as she figures out her next career move after losing her nannying job. Ashley Park, who plays Mindy, told OprahMag.com that she hopes Mindy will date around more in the future.
"I know I'm in good hands,” Park said. “I trust what's planned. A love interest would be fun! But the most important thing to me is the friendship with Emily."
We can also look forward to Emily and Gabriel’s relationship blossoming—or falling apart. After the steamy final few moments of the season, it appeared that Emily and Gabriel would ride off into the sunset together. But then Camille, Gabriel’s estranged girlfriend, texted Emily right before the credits rolled, leaving fans wondering if there would soon be trouble in paradise.
When Will Emily in Paris Season Two Hit Netflix?
The exact date for a return to production remains unknown, but it could be as early as Spring of this year. (Production, not the release.) With the series filming abroad in France, the current pandemic puts a big question mark over when the cast and crew can safely travel for production again. There is hope, though, as some filming in Paris has started back up; meanwhile, another of Star’s shows, Younger, will resume filming in New York soon. Star told Glamour that he hopes filming for Emily in Paris can begin in the spring.
It may be too early to know when filming overseas will be safe again, so until then, fans will have to sit tight. In the meantime, they can live vicariously through the stunning views and messy drama of the first ten episodes, while crossing their fingers for confirmation of another season soon.
